Strange issue when trying to start z4

I have noticed that every once in a while when I turn the key on my z4 that the engine makes no attempt to start. Turn the key back to off then on again and it starts up perfectly.

This happens 1 in 10 times when starting the vehicle.

Any ideas what the issue is? Or what I am doing wrong? I have a 6 month warranty so would like to get feedback then try with garage if something needs fixing.

It's a 2006 2.0 manual car.

Mine does this now and again. Not as frequently as 1 in 10 maybe more like once a month or every 2 months. Engine turns over but does not fire, turn key back and try again and it starts immediately. I'm not even remotely interested in why it does it as long as it doesn't ever fail to start completely.

That's the thing though mine doesn't even attempt to turn over. Key just goes to last position and nothing...

This has been posted here before and it is the immobiliser problem.

Think the fix was a new steering lock... Something about the lock not picking ip the key's code before you try and turn the engine over.

Try the spare key for a while see if you get the same results, that should rule out any key issues if there is any ,
Just to rule these out before you change the lock

Hmm - I've noticed a pause sometimes when I turn the key to start my Zed (2008 3.0si) hasn't yet failed to turn over but it is a noticeable pause though.

Never thought anything of it - just continue with it. . . :| Got a years warranty as it's an AUC (runs out next Jan).

We shall see. . . .

:driving:

Could this DIY fix the issue?

Thanks for all replies. Have now tried the spare key and had the same issue with that one.

So does sound like the immobilizer... Oh well off to the garage I go.

When I was messing around with my xenons a few months ago, I had to disconnect the battery. After I had reconnected the battery, my car would not start a few times on the first turn but always started on the second turn. It threw me slightly as to what the hell was going on but I then found I had not fully tightened the leads to the battery. Might be worth checking to rule the battery out!

I've had this twice in the space of a year, both times it's been after filling up with fuel...

Key in, engine turns over but doesn't start. Fires up straight away the second time though.

I'm sure you would have mentioned the check engine light if it was on, if it is there should be a code associated with the problem. I've had this exact problem on my Mazda 3 and it ended up being the purge valve.

I would check all battery conections as well as those on the starter just to rule out something really simple.

I had something like this happen as well. See the link below and the video I posted of the problem.
