Strange encounter...

Went to top up my fuel today and pulled in next to a 2009 Ferrari 430 Spider (mint condition only 9k miles). The owner came over and and spent 15 minutes complementing my 2011 Z4. Btw, he said he keeps it in a heated garage with carpeted floors and only drive it several times a year in perfect weather. He was shocked when I told him mine was daily...

One Ferrari, is it California, appears to have same roof mechanism as the Z4. Think i read somewhere Z4 roof was designed in Italy.
I thought was going to ask had any roof problems?

I've had some good cars, but none has attracted so many compliments from passers-by and fuel-fillers as the 35iS. I've put this down to several factors: its basically excellent design inside and out (by two women) and its colours - Melbourne Red and Ivory White, the latter perhaps unusually luxurious in the UK.

So, from schoolboys - 'Nice car, Mister' - to middle-aged ladies - 'What a beautiful car' - and the guy at a petrol station yesterday who left his car blocking a pump while he talked at length, it's always prompted people to want to say something about it.

To my eyes, its de-badged boot and 18" 5-spoke 295s bring out its beautiful proportions best, whilst the stone chip on the bonnet do it no favours, but nobody mentions them.

Last, the E89's a hard-top convertible, not common in the UK. People like that and I drive mine roof-down a lot.

Your forgetting the Mx5 mk3 and mk4 flip tops. They are taking over our small road, since Mrs G bought, one there are now 4. Such a trend setter.

You’re sure you didn’t mean to post this in the Man 4 Man section ?

California and the Portofino

I had a MK III MX-5 and the owner's forum was just full of posts about structural rust. I haven't seen one on here and the cars are of a similar vintage.

Watching one of those auction videos, they looked at what looked like nice MX-5 until they did the mot history check.
Not sure about auction, more like needed scrap yard.
I went looking years ago, gave up rust buckets.
Slightly younger and same price MGTF i found spotless, so i bought it.
Only sold when i saw a Z4 and bought one, wanted tin top.

Sorry but if we are comparing an F430 to an E89 Z4, there is absolutely no contest; unless you are completely deluded about how wonderful a BMW can be!

The E89 is a pretty car and not a bad car, but the F430 is a prettier car and also an 'icon' and a supercar. Every fucker has a BMW, not every fucker has a Ferrari; for good reason.
I would have an F430 in a heartbeat, if they weren't such expensive divas to keep running. :D

I know someone who owns an F430 and I hate him, with an unholy passion. My neighbour (opposite) also has an F430. I know when he is going out in it, as I can hear it start up from anywhere in my house. I watch like an excited schoolboy from the front window. I can honestly say I have never done that with any BMW.

Owning a Ferrari is an 'event'. Owning a BMW is transport. :P

Never go near the Mx5 Forums. Yes they are not well rust proofed. The paint is also very thin on top.

You can sort that easily though and the bits are so cheap you can replace them if needed. Have to say, having tried several over many years, we love em :D and the mk4 is a great driving machine, even after an ///MR. :driving:  Though the engine is a bag of bolt in comparison, it gets the job done. :) The steering and manual gear change simply leave any BMW, I have driven, feeling like a lorry.

Well MX5 like a pedal car compared to Z4, going to feel like a go-kart.

Indeed, never been one for weighty cars. In fact I think my beloved ///MR was the heaviest car I have owned in all my years. Including family cars. :o

Well I think the moral to the story was, a guy with a quarter million dollar car was impressed with with the styling of my Z4 E89. And in some ways during our conversation, he was impressed that I could own a cool car, for a fraction of the price, that I can drive daily. He, on the other hand, spent his lifetime savings on a car needing a heated, carpeted garage for a car driven a handful of miles a year.

Yup, had that conversation a few times, when I had the ///MR. Special cars that you can drive. :driving:
