Stop Start not working

Yesterday I picked up my 2.0i from the dealers as a pre reg car 5 months old with 100 miles on the clock.

Everytime I stopped the symbol to say that not all stop start conditions had been met and the engine kept running. I checked the manual and as far as I could see all the conditions had been met ( air temp, car in neutral air con off etc )

The drive home was around 50 miles so would have thought this would have charged the battery enough?

Anyone any ideas ?

Thanks

(never owned an open top car before but I'm completely get it now!)

That sounds odd. I'd imagine the dealer won't be open today either. The car will be covered by BMW's recovery service though - so give them a call and they'll come to you. It's probably something really simple.

Thanks Hizza

I'd planned to give it a couple of days to makesure that battery is charged etc and if its still not working I will go to the local dealer. I just wanted to try and make sure I'd not missed something obvious and so try an avoid looking an idiot at the dealers etc

my F11 525 only appears to do the stop start thing periodically.

I havent made my mind up yet as to if its a good thing..... I.E. will the cost of a starter motor and flywheel in a few years time make be qual to or more than the fuel cost saved?

I'm not convinced yet.

no I have tried turning the stop start function on and off and Ive checked the setting via the driver display. I am hoping its just the battery charge is too low as otherwise its not a great beginning to my ownership if it has to go into the dealer for fixing after just 1 day

It's been a little cold recently, from memory start/stop won't turn the engine off if the outside temp is below 3 or so degrees

It defaults on when you start up and first thing I do is switch it off :)

Most likely it's too cold or a low battery.

Our mini cooper and my previous 123d coupe both worked or not worked at random times its a lot to do with how cold it is and the way you drive it ,how far you drive etc etc and the driver, on her Fiat 500 it always worked for her and seemed never to work for me. :?

Mine doesn't default on. It stays at what it was when the engine was switched off.

U are very lucky as my AUDI automatically resets SS to on though once the engine's warm does what it says on the tin. Hated it at first, then started to like it when driving in London... though twice now, stopped at a junction, had the chance to immediately go & the millisecond before I pumped the clutch to take off Vursprung decided to kill he engine. It restarts but then the opportunity's gone, otherwise got quite used to it

Will have to check mine Carol as don't think mines does. I normally switch it off as soon as I get in the car, the times I have forgotten its kicked in annoyingly which suggests it hasn't remembered the last setting :? My previous two 1 Series were the same as it always came on when I started the car regardless if I had switched off before.

I may be wrong though :P

Mine hasn't worked for a while either, wonder if its permanently switched off, I get the same symbol as the op but the button light is not on .

Its generally a beefier battery and if it has the same starter motor as standard on the non stop / start cars those starter motors should last forever!

I'm not convinced that the system is worth it to save and egg cup full of petrol. It seems most folk turn it off anyway!

It will prob just be battery low as long as all other operating parameters are meet, The battery has to be at some thing like 80% percent charged which is a lot more than normal starting and working lights etc, See if the stall recovery works if it does there is nothing wrong with system just a low battery.

Must say that it is not a system that I like. Had a few hire cars with the stop/start and have always disabled it. That said you can get used to anything!!!! I expect the engineers at BMW have done all the testing but always seems to me that you are putting a lot of extra stress on the battery/starter/engine.

The cars will be engineered to take the extra starts into account. That is, durability testing the components to last the lifetime of the car (on average).

But yeah, best thing you can do is turn the AC off, AND the fans (so no HVAC), wait till the engine is warm, turn off all other electrical loads (heated seats, radio, lights, wipers, stop winding your windows up and down! :) ). Then if it is a warmish day and it STILL isn't working, then take it to a dealer or get someone to check codes.

With the 100 amp alternator and the 75a/h battery, it will be fully charged in less than an hour in a normal daylight drive!

Get it sorted under warranty. I was fobbed off for a while with ye olde "the battery just needs a good charge". Apparently in the end a fault with a seatbelt sensor was causing it to not work, and the battery was goosed. Only took the dealer three trips to sort it.
