Hi there. I have recently had a set of my car keys stolen, i have been quoted £900+ to change all the locks on the car but dont have that kind of money at the moment and i am scared they will come back soon for the car too... my insurance excess is £750 so no point in claiming it. Does anyone know of any other options that i have or anything that i can do??? arhhhhhhhh

anything would help
thanks

i left my jacket in the van with my car keys, house keys and wallet with credit cards and licence (the works) and when i went back down to get it, it was gone. GUTTED!!! i need a quick solution because i have blocked my car in with my van and i dont want to use it...... :headbang: :headbang:

Whatever you do, do it soon. If the car is stolen and you know the keys are in someone elses hands it might prevent you claiming for the theft of the car,...which would be a considerably more expensive problem.

Sorry to hear. Bad luck.

i have been searching the net for car breakers and i have found a bmw z4m that is a write off that has the locks but has no keys. the guy said that if i buy a key (he is going to give the vin no' to take to bmw) for the car and send it to him he will sell me them for £100. do you need the key to take out the ignition barrel ????? or is the guy having a laugh???

I think you DO need the key. If the barrel is removed with no key in it, it will fall apart. At least this is what I was told when I replaced the locking mechanism on my glove box.

Ask the breaker if a plastic emergency key will do the job. They are about £15 where a real key will cost £90. This way you limit your investment in case these locks don't work or the deal otherwise falls through.

called my home insurace and they said i dont have cover for that so thats a dead end and i called the insurance n they said the key cover is the same policy but they will give me £100 towards the final bill without claiming (better than nothing.lol) thanks for the help keep it coming.lol the only problem i can see for the breaking parts is trying to get the alarm to work with it but i suppose bmw would just program it like any other car!!!

why don't you see how much the actual parts will cost you and then find a good indy to change it? that should knock at least £300 plus the £100 from your insuarance would make the job much cheaper.

I agree with this. You might be throwing more money away with this breaker solution.

Sorry to hear the keys stolen

In terms of spare keys from breakers I think this is a red herring. The key has a transponder that has to match the barrel. You can programme any key to open the door but you cannot programme it to start the engine. This is why BMW is so expensive for a proper 'set'

Given the constraints of money and insurance if it were me I'd fit a secondary security measure. Could be as simple as a battery cut off, fuel cut off or simple aftermarket immobiliser/alarm system.
