Stiff and hard

My gear box seems very stiff and hard to get into gears sometimes, but if you go through them fast they are quite springy and responsive!! Are they all the same??

BMW engineered extra notchiness in to it to make it feel like a Ferrari. Every time you think of it as notchy, think of the 'chink' a Ferrari 355 gate makes as you click it through the gears. It'll put a whole new spin on it :)

(For aural reference, listen to the start of Jamiroquais' "Travelling Without Moving": spotify:track:0fnJi8VjwLdwZKl27kn60E)

Yes, it's definitely a bit notchy in first and second when cold, once it's up to temperature it disappears. The CDV doesn't help as it make notchiness+a poor change feel like you've forgotten how to drive.

Look, I managed a serious response with no innuendo, surely I get a prize for that? :)

Good to know mine is not the only one stiff between 1st and 2nd. And that gearbox problems are rare. But does this mean I cannot break it ? Sometimes I get a bit tired of the notchyness and really ram it back to 2nd and always worry if I ought to not be doing so (?)

um. so can I break it then or what

I've noticed that when it's cold it doesn't want to move easily. But then I just tighten my grip and run it through a few times. Once it warms up it just slips right on in with no hesitation.
What what am I talking about now?

On a side note, I did email Red Line oils and they said it's probably the gearbox oil just old. So I reckon it's like regular oil, need to change the lube out every now and then.

Haha I thought I'd add a but of humour to the forum. At least we all have stiff ones every now and then!

I'm suprised that mine is getting stiffer more frequently as it gets older. I had expected quite the opposite.

(etc...)

mines automatic, drops in when ever its needed

You've given up being able to handle it yourself and decided to get a machine to do the work for you...

I'd keep that to myself if I were you :)

Nothing wrong with a machine doing the work , the missus has a mini and the machine does the work, she is very satisitfied with the performance, it would be fair to say so am I. As for stiff an hard in the zed, the initail push from 1st to 2nd is a bit unpleasant , from 2nd up slip in nie aan easy. :driving:

If the missus is used to a Mini I always find it's much easier to impress with mine...
