Sticking Brake Caliper

Just noticed that my passenger side front caliper seems to be sticking when warm causing the steering to wobble a bit.

Is this common on a M and fixable ? don't really want to fork out for a caliper if possible so will take it off and have a look at it first..

Could this be related to the CDV as well as I have recently had this modified and maybe they didn't bleed the clutch.

thanks for any advice

I had this.

Turned out that the piston seal was not sealed properly. It had let salt in over the winter and the piston had become pitted.

Replaced it. Calliper was about 230 I think. Not worth taking a chance with breaks

Me too, exactly the same problem and cause. Sadly the only fix is to replace the caliper...

thanks guys - just phoned my local dealer who want £538 for caliper/fitting/bleed £230 being labour

I'm going to have a ring around first :D

thanks again

Had this too, same reasons above. Promptly bought a set of used APs for a bargain price.... (luckily!)

ive just sold both front mint condition calipers to incitius (sp) maybe the one he doesnt need he will sell to you, i can tell you they were both in mint condition from my 10k mile dry use car..... i believe he only needed one of them :-)

A repair kit which includes the piston and seals is only £15.

Why not rebuild it?
Have you checked that it includes the piston, as the last 'rebuild kit' I bought for my e34 M5 was a couple of seals - for nearly £100.

E34 M5 - item #10 'the rebuild kit' doesn't include the piston, and the diagram doesn't show a line to that component, which may indicate that it's not meant to be included.

Z4M - item #10 'the rebuild kit' doesn't show a line to anything other than the dust seal, so the piston & hydraulic seal may not be supplied.

I'd be happy to be proved wrong though, as I'll get some kits in while they're cheap. BTW, the M5#s 4 pot floating brakes were/are better than the Z4M's parts bin single-pots - but then they were £800 a calliper last time I bought one.

Little things like this was another reason i went for the ap's and the rotors are half price of bmws

Stop justifying your purchase to yourself, you were quite happy with the OEM items until the AP's came up for sale.

You simply cant ask stock items to brake another 115bhp+ all i was going to do was ruin them, so i went easy and waited out :-)

I know you're right, every mod you've done so far I want to do to my own car with the exceptions of my CSL's. I don't care how common they are, they were designed for the Z4MC IMO. I'm seriously considering the supercharger but I just know that the BBK would have to follow at some point and then there's the insurance cost implications as well. I promised myself I'd stop spending so much on cars but you keep posting about your latest acquisitions and tempt me back in. I thought you had a baby on the way to save for.

i got an offer i couldnt refuse!! ;-)

stock is imo VERY good! now with proper adjustment i can lower the car slightly and dial in different camber, castor settings, plus ontop it all get a softer ride at the twist of knob.... i literally cant wait to get the nitrons installed!!
ive gone with a VERY custom setup with custom spring rates and damper valveing. Cant wait, then after this its break time and concentrate on building a new section to my house........ ;-(

Picked up Beedub's old calipers this morning and replaced the sticking nearside one this afternoon.

Thanks to Beedub, saved me money on the BMW parts and his are in top condition. Also had a quick look at his impressive car. Top chap!

Yeah, bleeding was no problem, bit of tubing and some brake fluid in a container got it done in 5 minutes flat. Seemed fine last night and I'll have another check of the pedal feel today. This is a job BMW would charge a fortune for...
