Er, help. My '06 2.5 sport (53000 mls) gets to 65mph and all of a sudden the steering wheel starts to oscillate slightly and the car begins to wander and feel a bit unstable. The run flats have been binned, the front bushes been replaced, wheel balance checked and a full alignment check done. This irrespective of road surface or conditions.the car seems fine up till 65 and then it starts. a specialist has had a couple of looks at it, tried acouple of things but suspects the steering column. anybody any ideas?

That is not a symptom from the common steering column failure. Have a look at the lower column U-joints though, this is separate from the very expensive main column, so not too expensive. The steering rack could be involved, but rather unlikely IMO. If the bearings were going, you'd hear that, I would think. Also have a look at the steering tie rod joints.
What about control arm ball joints? Were these done with the bushes? If not, I think they are the most likely culprit, along with tie rod joints.

Cheers for the reply, the front end has been thoroughly checked and is ok with no play apparent in any of the ball joints. I did wonder, in view of the sudden onset at 65mph if there might be a bit of aerodynamic lift creeping in changing loading and causing the front struts to 'flutter' which is being fed back through the steering (clutching at straws here). I understand that the steering is not speed sensitive.
