Steering Whine

Hi

I noticed a loud whine only in very specific circumstances.

If I try and do a 3 point turn, at the stage where I reverse and the steering is at an angle, I get a whine thats similar to a sigh.

No idea what it could be, and before I take the car back to a dealer, hoping someone can shed some light if they had the issue before.

It only happens if theres some lock on the wheel.
Thanks

Ok, just tried to create the sound again with a mate in the car and nothing - all good, so will monitor

back from another journey and happened again albeit slightly. just a brief sigh after putting it in reverse.

Concerned it may be the steering pump

Power steering pump

Electric power steering :)

BMW Quote....

To give you more bends per litre, an electric motor is used to assist the steering. The advantage compared to traditional hydraulic systems is that it only needs electricity when the car is actually changing direction. If the car is travelling in a straight line or round a corner at a constant angle, the electric motor is idle and does not draw any power

Certainly others have reported power steering problems which can relate to ambient temperature, speed etc.

The thing is, it's very specific as it only happens when doing a 3 point turn and always in the reverse stage.

Nothing feels wrong, it just that annoying sigh when I start reversing.

Car has warranty so I want to take it, but

a) Don't want to go back and the car not do the damn noise - they will only say nothing is wrong
b) I'd like to have more of an idea what the issue is (Gearbox of steering) I say gearbox, but im just being paranoid im sure.

i've heard the same ''whine'' a couple of times. as you say, it's only when the wheels have quite a lot of steering lock on (3 point turns).

i haven't had any issue's with it as such, altough i've probably jinxed it now.

Its less of an issue and more annoying with hoping it won't become an issue. Saying that, it shouldn't be happening. At all

This has happened on mine periodically ever since I had it - kind of like a gentle hoot, almost always in reverse and left hand down full lock. Happens more in the summer when it is warmer. No idea what it is for sure, I figure something needs greasing so I am going to ask my Indy to lubricate the steering column bearings when they do it's oil service in 1,500 miles or so. I know I could do it myself, but I keep forgetting

good call, had a similar issue in another car.

Weather was warmer yesterday since i've had it.

Exactly same thing too with left hand down. But seems few other have it too
