Steering wheel warning light on dash

Hi
The steering wheel warning light appeared on the dash earlier with a sudden loss of power steering.

Does this alway mean a new rack is needed? It's strange as when I turn the car off and on again it works for a few seconds with no warning so the power steering isn't actually broken.

Are there any sensors which could cause this problem?

I'm planning to take it to a garage on Monday but I would like to know what to expect

Cheers

I know there is a Steering Angle sensor in the steering wheel itself but not sure if it could cause your problem, do you have a way to read the codes?

Not sure if this helps or not but BMW references says three reasons for the light could be

1) Fault in EPS, DSC, or ECM modules or steering angle sensor

2) Over or Undervoltage (>17 or <9)

3) Overloading of the EPS (overheating of unit)

Stored codes should give you some guidance
