Steering wheel/controls retrofit question

Hi, just a query regarding the standard E85 steering wheels. From what I can gather, a retrofit kit was available to add multifunction controls to the regular non-sport Z4 steering wheel. When fitted would the result be identical to a 'factory' multifunction steering wheel?

Basically, what I am trying to find out - can you take the control buttons from a multifunction wheel (which is worn) and add them to a regular wheel (which is in good condition)? Or is there some difference?

Yes straight transfer.I would get the wheel retrimed by Royal wheels first,then transfer the buttons .

Yes you can but, you might have to trim the foam under the spoke covers to take the buttons. The standard wheels have more foam on them to fill out the standard spokes, but you can trim it down easily with a Stanley blade . The foam is hidden under the spokes so is not seem at all .

Thanks for the responses. Just been looking into the Royal Wheel retrims and they do look good! I guess that's probably a better route to go, look for a worn multi function wheel and just get it retrimmed.

Trouble with that is that if the steering wheel is worn, the buttons and plastic surrounds most likely will be, too

to be fair the non sport ones dont seem to wear half as bad as the rubberised efforts on the sport wheel.

Ones in my car have no wear whatsoever and its high miles.

A worn pre facelift multi function wheel is the way to go. BMW don't sell the retro fit kit anymore and even when they did it was quite expensive for what it is. For the price BMW used to sell the kit at you could probably get the wheel secondhand and the retrim at royals done.
