Steering Wheel Control Refurb

Looking at different options for re-furbing the area around the wheel controls and was just wondering why nobody has covered them in leather as far as i can see?

I'm probably going to get them resprayed but wouldn't mind having a go at wrapping them.

Prob need to be thin leather to work. I've just refitted mine since respraying them matt black. So much better than the silver look.

Did you spray them yourself?

Yeah, halfrauds rattle can job, but look perfect. I let them cure a few days over a heat source to make sure dry and hard before putting back on. Did the inner door handles too.

Did you use any laquer over the top?

How long have you had them fitted?

Nope, couldnt find a matt lacquer.

Put them back on yesterday.

I'm either thinking respray or covering in alcantara. I would love to do alcantara but I have a feeling I would cock it up.

Quick question. How did you get the rubber textured stuff off the pieces before painting?

See here, srhutch refurbed his and did a how to, including getting the rubber off. Takes elbow grease and time - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=37962&hilit=Steering+wheel

I tried plastidip, and whilst the finish was questionable  , it still only lasted weeks on a daily driver. I think srhutch's is peeling too now. I had mine spayed matte black, no lacquer. It has gone shiny on the edges but not worn through. The guy who did them did not have the right equipment to spray a matte lacquer - though I am not sure why. Maybe it requires specialised spray heads ? Anyway, eventually I will get them done properly.

Hope this helps...
