Steering warning light came on!

Just manoeuvring in reverse into a parking space when the amber steering fault light comes on and the steering becomes 'solid'!

Switched the ignition off and back on again, light went out and steering back to normal. Please tell me I'm worrying unduly! I presume that the steering has a 'fail to safe' function if this should occur at speed? :cry:
 
Check the obvious - your fluid levels - then turn the wheel lock to lock to expel any air

Being electric its one thing that stops working pretty soon if you have an alternator fault. As you reported it becomes very heavy. At speed you might not notice it until you try to turn left/right.

My wife's astra has it and when the alternator failed I felt it was dangerous to drive for the above reason.
 
Had this problem. Was yaw sensor in passenger side compartment under seat throwing EPS module off. Get it scanned to diagnose at specialist

Sort of, but not exactly. The steering will become quite heavy, just like a hydraulic system would if the engine should stall at speed. There is still a complete mechanical connection between steering wheel and road wheels. It'll be really stiff, but it will turn. The important thing is to not panic. Steer firmly and know quick movements will not be possible. Other than that you have full control.
 
Thanks for all the gen chaps. Displaying my ignorance but fluid levels on an electric steering?
