Steering rack failure prevention

Hey guys, I just bought a Z about a week ago (been driving Miata’s on and off the track for years now and decided to try out a Z).

I’ve been reading about power steering failures in high temp environments, I live and commute around the Mojave CA area so this would definitely cause an issue for me. Are there any known prevention methods or suggestions you guys have? I definitely plan on taking it to willow springs and having fun with it :)!

It’s an 03 3.0I 6sp which has been a blast so far, the previous owner sold it to me for real cheap because he did not like that his soft top did not work (just the pump) or the dings that got put in it.

Hello,
Welcome.
No idea about the steering but nice car & wheels  . Shame about the dents. :(

Not heard about this issue in the UK tbh, but welcome to the forum in any case.

107s look great with Maldives Blue, must get myself a set.

could you mean the sticky steering issue? certainly seemed to be worse for me when a car had been sitting in hot sun all day. i believe there are some adjustments you can make to the column. do a search for 'sticky steering' and it should turn up a good few threads, been discussed quite a lot before.

Welcome to the forum - your Z4 looks great in that colour and with those wheels.

Welcome to the Forum! Always nice to see someone appreciate these cars and keep them on the road. As for the pump do a search on forum there are many post on how to move to "boot". I have not moved mine yet as it is still working but may attempt at some point. The UK members are lucky as several members will relocate it for you. Being in the middle of the US and in the "sticks" not a soul around to do it for me. Either way good luck and happy travels.

Thanks for the replies guys! I’ll have to look into it more, it looks like it’s not a super common issue but something to be aware off.

I guess the problem is that as most of us on here are in the UK we don't have any experience of high temperature environments.

But we have a company in the UK that will recondition EPAS units for E85s for £305, so currently around $400, with a lifetime guarantee - as well as ABS pumps and ECUs.

I'd be amazed if there wasn't someone in the US offering a similar service - it's just a matter of finding them!

Evening Iain. No problems with the steering on my recently acquired Z4 but did have with my first one. You mention a company who do refurbs in the UK. Just in case I need repairs do you know their name?
