Steering groan - wheels side

When you turn the wheel, at low speed, the steering groans.

Today, I removed the rubber covers and really greased the rack but that made no difference at all. When I listen, I can hear the groan at the actual wheel side, not at the rack side.

When the car is in the air, there is no noise what so ever when turning.

Any suggestions on what I can look at next, especially given that the noise seems to be at the wheel side and not anywhere on the rack itself?

Just looked back at my records:
Sachs struts, Lemforder top mounts, Febi Bilstein bump stops, Lemforder drop links and Suplex springs.
From BMW there were, knuckle bolts, lower rubber seats, upper rubber seats, washers, bearing cups, top spring plates and dust covers.

Enuff_zed - I think you fitted new ones?
I did, the whole assembly was new. Have you been far since they were fitted?

About 150 miles since replacement only
Ah well there you are then................. a build up of cobwebs.
Let me know if it turns out to be an issue with any of the parts I fitted.

I doubt there is anything wrong with that, but not sure how to troubleshoot

Having the car in the air and moving from side to side is completely silent

So it's a suspension joint that only groans when it's compressed?
Track rod ball joint, wishbone/hub ball joint, top mount. Not much else?

I would have to ref to Mr Norfolk as he fitted them recently

I’m sure the east anglia legend would have done a proper job with that
I'd bloody hope so, though as you know, I sold a right dog a while back.

If you have raised the car in the air, on jack stands perhaps, can you lift up the hub to simulate pressure from the road with a trolley jack?

I would look first in the bits that you didn’t replace. It only groans when the wheels are on the ground, but even a 15 degree steering movement when completely still, makes the same noise. At that stage, I doubt any suspension action is taking place yet?

It is almost “tick tick” when you make a tiny movement with the steering wheel. I did record it but it did not come out well on the phone

I sent you the video
Got it. Sounds more like a knock than a groan from that? Given that the steering wheel is being rocked but not enough to move the wheel then I'm thinking either intermediate shaft UJs or possibly track rod end?

Yes, it is more “click click click” when making a small movement from the steering wheel. Audible at the wheel end when you have your head in the wheel arch
