Steaming Bonnet.....

No, it's not what YOU think..... tut tut

Light rain this morning on the way to work and as usual I got caught in traffic getting through town and while I was in the queue I noticed that the bonnet started steaming, gently at first, then more and more until it was dry. I haven't noticed this happening before, the temperature gauge was rock-solid at the halfway mark and no performance issues.

This a normal thing?

I should mention my car is a '57 3.0si Sport Roadster.
 
i think this is normal -

Large engine, limited space in the bay, the bonnet being very close to the engine so attracting and displacing more heat

(Mine does the same)
 
utterly normal....alloy bonnet lets the heat through even more than a steel one and theres no underbonnet insulation to inhibit same. Does it in the rain even in relatively moderate temperatures in slow traffic.

first time I realised that it was an alloy bonnet was when I couldnt attach my magnetic inspection lamp anywhere, :rofl:
 
Strangely I never noticed this at all with my 3.0 Si Coupe over 1.5 years of ownership, that's not to say it didn't do it but I never noticed it. Maybe I just never got stuck in much traffic during the day in the rain with that car. In the M however I've been stuck in a few traffic jams in the pouring rain and yep it really let off some steam.
Perfectly normal I'm sure but I was a bit concerned the first time I saw it :)
 
I've noticed it a number of times, fairly regularly in fact.

Sometimes it looks as though it's on fire under there :(

It has never concerned me though, just the heat and cold reacting in the usual way.
