Startup rattle/tapping.

From cold when first started I get maybe 1 or 2 seconds of what sounds like hydraulic lifters tapping, does anyone else get this?

Engine is the M54 3.0

Karl.

Nope . 90k 3.0 si sweet as you like from cold start .
what engine you have may be relevant to answer ? also oil choice ?

When did you last change your oil?

Doesn't hurt to change a little more often than recommended, seen as its so easy to do yourself.

The HVA issue?

I used to get that tapping noise, sporadically, for 10 minutes or so from starting the car. The outside temp was irrelevant. It tapped in the summer and winter. I documented the sound via video and emailed it to my local stealership before the warranty ran out, (a CYA effort). They claimed they couldn't replicate the noise. I haven't heard the tapping in over a year now. So, your issue may resolve itself as well.

Sorry it's the M54B30 engine.
Oil was last changed at service (2 owner FBMWSH), I've only had it two months so not changed it myself nor do I know what grade is in there.

What oil is recommended as I may as well change it for peace of mind anyway?

Thanks!

Usually as you approach the bottom of the dip-stick around when the yellow oil light starts coming on after you turn off, the engine takes that extra half second to second longer to get oil pressure up.

Mine was starting to do it again the other day, light started coming on, topped up 1l, now quiet again.

So probably due a top-up of oil!

Cheers

Dave

Checked the oil this afternoon and there's plenty in there, a bit too much in fact was just over the maximum on the dip stick.
Just to point out If oil is low it will not delay getting up to pressure... It would have to be below the pick up pipe to have any effect on pressure and if that was the case I'd have a dead engine very, very soon! :headbang: lol

guess you will never know what oil is in there until you have it changed ?
even if its a while off my first move would be new oil & filter . it could be a cheap fix & gives you the peace of mind ?
may be worth going for 5w30 castrol magnatec on a higher mile engine or 5w30 castrol edge ? both offer good cold start performance .

15 months now with the uprated cylinder head and no rattles or taps :driving:
Uprated? What have you had done mate, ported, cam'd, SS valves, bronze guides, etc?

Don't get these engine types mixed up chaps, the OP is on about the M54 not the N52 which R26Andy's post relates to.

My understanding is that if the noise from the tappets goes within a second or two then there is not a problem. If it persists then I would look into further.

Yeah, perhaps there is another more subtle mechanism at play with the oil lower in the sump?

Or maybe it's just co-incidence in drain-down rate?

Either way if it were so simple as oil under/over pickup point then there should be never any variance in the ticking etc...

Usually when work colleagues have asked why their car doesn't stop ticking, it's because they are running very low on oil... but the engine still goes haha :D

Hmmmmm...

The time to normal pressure on start up could be slightly affected by low oil level. The oil in the supply pipe has a few extra cm to travel before it hits the pump and gets distributed. Once in hits the pump, it goes quite quickly, but the time below the pump can be comparatively slow, thus a few cm could make a difference.

That said, the engine would have to sit for quite a while for oil to drain down past the pump. No idea if it's hours or days. And if the oil was below the pickup, you'll never get oil pressure, just big problems.

Over filled oil could cause tappet noise due to aerated oil not providing a solid lift, similar issue as air in brake lines. Doesn't sound like it's that over filled though. Best course of action right now is an oil change.
