Hi everyone,

Whilst driving around in traffic today i heard a loud sqealing sound from the engine. It sounded like a loose fan belt that needs changing but after looking undr the bonnet i realised that the fan that cools the radiator is not driven by a fan.....or at least i couldn't see one...

Can someone please issue some sound advice on what is the matter and if it is easy to fix???????

Cheers

As you say probably a loose belt but not a 'fan' belt as ours is an electric fan.It is probably the auxilary belt which runs the alternator and AC compressor.

Could be a worn belt...

could also be worn bearings in the various components that the belt drives....the tensioner pulley bearing would frequently go out on an old Volvo of mine and would squeal quite a bit...

pop the hood and check out the belt and see if it looks frayed or cracked or just bad in general....50k-60k miles is a reasonable replacement interval...could go longer though without too much problem, as long as you were keeping an eye on it....
