Squealing noise when accelerating

I've had a look online and seen a few different answers, so coming to you experts for some advice!

I have a 53 plate Z4 roadster which i have purchased within the last month or so.

When accelerating (normally with my foot slightly down on the accelerator) i get a squealing kind of noise. To me it sounds like it's coming from under the bonnet... but i'm not sure.

At first (as a total novice!) i thought it may be air squealing through valves or something like that, but i'm guessing it's a little more sinister.

From what i've read i've seen breaks mentioned and also belts.

Is anyone able to give me any kind of advice? Has anyone experienced anything similar?

As mentioned i'm a total novice, so would like some advice before i pay someone to have a look at it.

Cheers guys.

Sorry I haven't experienced this, but from what you say it sounds like it could be a belt or tensioner pulley perhaps.

Sounds like one for mystic meg.

A few more clues required, then I'm sure the mystics of the forum will come forth with some possibilities.

Does it make this nose with the car sat on the drive?

If so open the bonnet and stick your ear in there, not too close, I hate blood. Should get a better idea of where the noise is coming from.

Squealing under acceleration on some of the old cars I had used to be the sign of a loose alternator belt... ie where it was slipping

Retensioning, not too much used to sort it quickly.

However, if you have slack in the alternator belt, it might be worth thinking about replacing the belt in case it has stretched & thus weakened... let us know

i have the exact same noise and can't locate it either, only have it when slightly pressing the accelerator or with cruise control at for example 60mph in 5th gear (2.5).
also it lets loose a short squeel each time i gently change gear. Most annoying.

I did check the air intake hose, yes it was cracked and replaced with a complete new one, but it didn't change anything regarding to the whistle.

Most likely the ghost whistle, which is mostly like a cracked hose (item #5 from the real oem link below). Once you find item 5 under the bonnet look real good around it to include squeezing the hoses to find a crack. The main cracking spot is the small 1 inch hose going towards the rear of the car.

I have an update guys... and it's good news.

I had a look under the bonnet and found the culprit - a small rubber hose (a couple of inches long) as suggested by Aebous!

As a temporary measure i have wrapped it in electrical tape and this has stopped the noise... happy days!!

All i need now is some advice on how to get a replacement part!!! Any help guys?

Tanks, I get one great advice moment a month. I grabbed a replacement part from a dealer, but that was back in the states. The new one I received had a thicker hose on it. It hasn't given me a problem for a few years now. I don't recall the part being that much...less than $50... but that was a few years ago.

I'm having the same noise. I have changed the rubber hose which was a bit cracked, but the sound is still there. I have changed both belts, but no change. The noise is coming on when the car is warm, never when its cold.

I was hearing the exact same noise when i was accelerating. I followed the advices that i found in this thread and i found that #5 part was actually torn apart.Got my replacement for 20,00 GBP and i am waiting for it to arrive atm. I will post when i receive the item to confirm that the replacement of #5 part fixed this wierd noise.

Dealer is the obvious choice - Sopers of Lincoln are good to deal with (as many will testify on here) - quote the part number and the Forum and they will generally give you a good price or at least porice match. You can order directly from Coopers Online by putting the part number in the search query.

I changed the silicone hose and the noise is gone. I've uploaded a photo to show to everyone what they should be looking for!

Cheers!
