Squeaky noise.

Well, started all of a sudden today with a whistley squeak (feint) going round a left hand bend.

Then drove the 8 miles home with a squeaky noise.

Thought it sounded like a broken front spring scrubbing/rubbing on something.

Running along with engine off and clutch up/down it still made the noise, it almost went away on smooth roads, but was worst on rough roads.

Got home and checked all four corners and the springs all seem in one piece and seated properly.

It seems drivetrain ish related as when I start the car or when I drive it and it's under load at say 1000-2500rpm it also makes the noise to the vibration of the engine, and then stops as speed gets up (engine speed)

Just wondering what this might be... both engine mounts look good, it still drove fine, accelerated hard etc, just sounded broken.

Heatshield fallen lose onto the exhaust maybe? Propshaft/gearbox mount?!

Gonna have to take it somewhere to find the cause (four post lift or whatever). It's not an insubstantial noise. Good thing it's under warranty (non BMW though)

Cheers for any ideas of what it might be, or things to look out for :D

I'm no expert on this car but could it be a belt?
Something similar happened on an old Rover of mine, rough roads caused the alternator to flex on its mounting and the belt would squeak a bit.

Hmmm, just been for another drive and thinking it's possibly exhaust related.

Had it doing it when blipping at very low rpm (900-1100rpm) just sat on the drive. Clearly on the run it's wobbling all over and resonating too under load at low rpm, but goes away as the revs get up.
Also, at idle, feels a bit more vibrationy in the cabin, like there is something not fixed up/damped properly...

I guess I need to get right under there and have a wobble of them, jack + axle stands time it is then :D (or go to my dads and get it over the pit)

Well, an hours work and here was my issue!

The stone, that somehow got in there perfectly well, but then decided to be a perfect fit to rattle like a good un, but not get crushed, or find itself falling back out

You can see at the top right of the sump (near the connector) where it had been rubbing... just surface marks.

Nice stone!
