Squeak!

Ok, I was originally led to believe the quiet yet annoying squeak was my fuel pump playing up. Basically when idling you can hear an intermittent squeak/whine coming from behind you. The fuel pump was replaced but it’s really made no difference. It's constantly intermittent if that makes sense, every second or so, then maybe it will stop for a moment or two. If you just press the throttle very lightly the engine will rev and then a moment after you will get the squeak. Oddly if you turn the steering wheel side to side quickly this will also cause a short squeak from behind, logically that could be because the engine needs a bit more fuel to drive the power steering though. So I supposed it could still be the pump!

I know there is an additional in line fuel filter under the car from the previous owner, anyone think this could be causing the pump to squeak? Assuming it is the pump!?

One further note to add. It was making the squeak the whole way home until I filled up then it stopped immediately, and hast occurred since. So it would appear to be related to the amount of fuel in the tank.
Any ideas?

If you get a squeak on bumps, then I would actually think that the bushings for the rear sway are shot, but since this sounds completely different from that, then I would check the fuel filter fittings. :)

mmmm, def not squeaking on bumps, i guess its more of a whine really. It also does it when you turn the ignition to the second notch (makes a very distinct whistle/whine) lasts for about 2 seconds or until you turn the igntion over. Which does again point the finger toward the fuel pump being unhappy - i think!?

I have the exact same problem with my 04 2,5i Z4, have no idea what it is, but im going to ask when I take it to service on thursday and see if they know what it is :)

There's actually another pump back there used to diagnose leaks in the tank. It just pumps air into the tank to measure if the pressure drops more than expected. It also pumps in air to compensate for the fuel burnt.
I dunno if it cycle on and off, it's always on or what. I don't even know where in the rear is located. But it's just another thing might be worth check. Im sure if you lift the car with the engine on you should be able to trak down the noise.
It's part #3 "here
Just an idea...
