speed limiter removal

Carl, I have 2 neighbours, one with an E46 M3 and one with a M6 - both of them have told me in the past that, although BMW will tell you there is a limiter set to 155mph, its not true. The M6 has apparently been upto 180mph and its stock.

A derestricted M5 or M6 should do the other side of 200 mph. The limiters have a tolerance of 10%, so are often set at 170 mph. So it should be relatively easy to see an indicated 180 even if the limiter is in place.

the speedo will not be 15mph off on a standard car, pushing it maybe 5mph. as mentioned in other posts if you just get a remap the limiter will also be removed and you'll benefit from a more responsive, slightly quicker car to drive plus slightly improved mpg. dms and birds are expensive, alot of tuning places wilkl do it for 350. i have numerous friends with various german cars that have had this done.

Have you compared speedo speed vs GPS speed across a number of cars? 10 mph is common. As for the limiter, there is a 10% 'tolerance' on it, and most manufacturers use it fully so they can set the limiter higher and still meet the requirements.

i have compared some speedo's with gps and most i have had is about 7, seeing as this is a new car i wouldnt expect much to be lost. my coupe untill 145 lost 2mph. haven't checked above that.

At V max my car was doing 162mph through the timing beams and was showing an indicated 167~168 mph, and was just touching the limiter as it went through the beams. Another chap with a Z4MC present was getting near enough identical figures. I think the car would do a genuine 170mph in fifth and maybe a little more in sixth depending on how well it pulls the longer gearing.

My speedo reads 7% on the optomistic side. Not a huge figure you might think but at high speeds it means that an indicated 150mph is only 139.5mph. The highest I've had is an indicated 184mph. Alpina say the car will do 170mph. If you take 7% from 184 you get 171mph. Spooky!

personally I wouldn't use a generic chip and I wouldn't go to anyone that didn't have a full on rolling road and had at least 5 years business experience in remapping cars of this type and remapping was their main source of income, its just too easy to do as a business, that's why there are so many people doing it, doesn't mean they are actually any good. The reason the likes of DMS are expensive is because they are good and because of the aftersales and the back up if there is a problem, think about it, you spend 30k+ on a car to chuck on a cheap chip, doesn't make sense does it

No it doesn't make any sense, there's some amount of garbage spouted by some of these companies and you would be mad to go for the cheapest options without research. Companies like DMS and Thorney Motorsport who specialise in this engine are worth paying for.

Pontio, if your car was only 2mph out when you were doing 145 I am astonished. You have one accurate speedo there.

Its just one of those things, You can get an identical one off the street and it may be more or less accurate but I was just pointing out that I think 15mph out is alot and I dont think you would find a new car that inacurate. I once had a customer with a 306 which was 5mph out and that was at 40..

At, or around, 155mph the speedo does not really matter. The question becomes whether or not you are able to handle the road conditions, traffic, etc. It is nice to say that you have hit 155 or any other limited number, but make sure that if you try this:

1) It is a deserted area!!! I would hate for you to mess up and ruin someone else's life (or your own)
2) Ensure a proper area to slow down,,, we have good brakes, but have you ever tried to slow down from 155 or more???
3) Be prepared to get caught by the local police. You have a very good chance of getting caught this time of year, the roads are being more heavily patrolled at this moment up until (and slightly after) New Year's  If you can't afford a very good lawyer and be prepared to pay steeply, then don't do it.
4) If you have any problems with deer, or any other roaming animals, just don't try, you will never be able to react in time.

My 2 cents,,,, yeah, yeah, I know. Just be careful, y'all!! :driving:

Cheers!
