The problem with this system is there is no notification that the first post has been made, it relies on mods actively checking all the time.

That mod is for version 3.0.1 of the forum software and was last updated in 2008. By the looks of it there are lots of issues with it.

What version are we on?
I have a bit of experience with phpbb coding, so I can have a bash at sorting something for us?

We're on the latest version. I'd prefer not to mess with the phpbb code if possible though, as I have had bad experiences of things breaking when you come to upgrade. Phpbb is nasty in terms of how it handles plugins. I may try and craft something that runs outside phpbb that polls the database, or uses triggers to create notifications.
