Sound generator retrofit

Hi, I have a 2003 Z4 E85 with the 2.5L M54 engine and I would like to retrofit the sound generator. I have heard you can just use the sound generator from the 3.0L model, but I'm not sure which parts I need. I have already found the sound generator itself for sale, but I think I need some different hoses for the intake, with an extra hole for the sound generator. Does anyone know exactly which parts I need? Thanks!!

Hi, others have carried out this conversion - if you use the forum search facility it should bring up some information

not sure why people bother tbh, it doesn't make a great sound really, very artificial, better off spending the money on a modded back box

I don't think it sounds bad, just very directional. It's noticeably coming from the passenger footwell, which I think is the reason it sounds sounds artificial to me.

I'd spend the money on the exhaust as well if it were me; as long as it didn't drone. That's one plus for the sound generator. It's quiet when just pootling around.

I retro fitted one on wifey's 2.5i as she said it was too quiet and wanted a back box delete.
I was soon put off that by people in the know on here, then hearing one.
So in went the sound generator with one piece of foam removed. Wife loves it, so who cares what anyone else thinks. I have peace. :)

I suggest at that point I could pass on all the details for you, part numbers, bits to swap etc.
It's actually very easy to do, but collecting the bits and knowing how to mix and match a couple of pieces is the tricky bit.

In short, you need all the bits in your diagram except the bulkhead blank which you already have fitted.

You will also need the different intake boot with the extra offtake to the sound generator. This should come with an adaptor in the end that fits to the pipe from the MAF. You need to take that adaptor out and re-use the one rom your existing set up as the diameter is very slightly different and won't all fit together.

The fiddliest part of the whole job is getting the intake boot back on squarely, with no rucked edges or air leaks.

The other parts I think I simply googled the part numbers from Realoem and picked my options from there

The previous owner of my si had removed the foam from both ends of the noise pipe...I HATED the boomy drone inside the car, particularly when the roof was up. It was just tiring. I don't see the point of piping noise into the car for no good reason.

I'm not against noise, I'm a biker and I do car track days. Screaming induction noise can be exhilarating, sometimes, it has its place!. I've had to quieten several of my cars to get them approved by the noise Police at track days, particularly at Bedford.

I deleted the system and plugged the hole in the bulkhead and I'm quite fond of the car now.

Finally got around to fitting the sound generator. I love it. With one foam piece removed, it makes a lovely sound at high rpm, without being annoying when I'm gently cruising. I also love how it sounds nice inside the car, but there's no loud sound on the outside, so I'm not annoying the people around me. Great mod, thanks a lot for the help.
