05 2.5i base here- have the AFE intake and fucking love it but I’d love to hear more of it. Is the sound gen mod still compatible with an AFE or do I need OEM?

You can use the included mini-filter on the sound gen tubing and remove some -or all- of the foam. Does it do as much as OEM? No. Is it noticeable? Somewhat 
You can just see the secondary filter peeking over the AFe cover, situated just behind the bend of the intake

What parts did you need/ not need since we have the AFE? Trying not to spend a whole bill on the sound generator alone lol

Okay so I finally managed to get my hands on a few of the parts- the rubber sealing grommet that goes to the port in the firewall and the single piece of tubing. So I can just throw a mini filter on there and call it a day? Maybe DIY a bracket?JimLaheyJunior

Hi JLJ,
You may know this already, but take a look at this document page 10 and 11 explaining the sound generator parts. The membrane is relevant and prevents air flow from cabin to intake or vice versa.

Sorry [ref]JimLaheyJunior[/ref], can’t quite help you with the retrofit as I already had the sound generator. Just had to remove the front area and swap it with the small filter. As for a bracket: the sound generator bolts to the engine using a single Torx (or Allen, not entirely sure from memory) on a bracket.

I'm pretty sure from my days using an AFE (many years ago admittedly) that you cannot fit the sound generator with an afe, (without some quite destructive modding at least) as the actual sound generator has an intake from the original airbox which is lost when you fit the AFE housing thar connects to the throttle body

Let’s hope not, just ordered $170 worth of parts for it. I believe a guy in this very thread is running the combo, and if I gotta get creative that’s what I’m all about haha
I think (may be wrong) from those pics he had just run the pipe upto nearby the Afe to pick up some noise from the Afe potentially and bring it into the cabin? You could bring some noise in from the filter that way.. I cant see the actual sound generator in those pics

Yep I think the idea is a smaller filter as close as you can to the intake, Which I can already hear blasting at 3k rpm so I’m super excited about this mod. Also got a custom made resonator delete coming in from Germany and I still would enjoy hearing my expensive intake
