sound generator function

I removed the foam from my sound generator pipe yesterday and i have to say i love the sound. My question is, what is this pipe for. What function does it serve. Is it literally just a pipe that allows you to hear the sound of the engine or does it have another function, thanks in advance

Think it is just for the sound. Can't think of any engineering reason for it to be fitted.

I went the other way and removed the sound generator assembly entirely with no change in performance/function. It's purpose is for sound only to enhance the "ultimate driving experience."

where is it located? I presume somewhere against the firewall.
It runs between the firewall and the intake. Usually comes off the intake before the intake attaches to the rubber boot which attaches to the throttle body.

RealOEM.com http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BU33&mospid=49304&btnr=13_1173&hg=13&fg=20 will give you an idea of what the system looks like for my 2007 model. For a 2003 http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=BT53&mospid=47799&hg=13&fg=20 the diagram isn't quite as informative.

I see the assy. on my car. Which clamp needs to be removed to access the foam inside? is it the 1st, 2nd or third clamp after the sound generator?

Not necessary to remove any clamps. Tube (part #6 on your year model diagram) can be pulled out of the firewall to access the foam pieces.
