Tried putting mine back in just now, its always been out ever since I had the car. I did like the sound without but at times I felt like my ears were ringing it was so loud. Its much more civilised and refined back in and its got that classic BMW straight-6 noise, whereas before it was more of a howl. However, I do think its a bit less "fun". I think cutting the foam in half or 2/3s of it might be the best compromise between fun and refinement.

Just put one piece back in as I was growing a bit weary after having both bits out.
However, I misplaced both foam pieces stupidly so I had to cut out a similar shaped piece and replaced at the firewall.
Sounds much more civilised now while retaining a bit of the fun factor. Just the right balance imo

Interesting. Was also considering ditching the runflats for the Rainsport 3's. What I'm finding with the runflats (and it might not be them that's causing this) is when I'm driving it sometimes feels there's a little gremlin in the steering wheel just ever so slightly pulling the steering wheel - is that what you were finding?
It's all person preference with the sound generator, but to me it sounds like something is wrong with the car. Tried different configurations of foam, didn't like any, so put it back to stock and am much happier. They should have used the money spent on the sound generator and engineering to design it on the exhaust to make it sound better, it's just too tame for a sports car.
Def too loud for me deleting backbox. Cops can take u off the road here in Holland too if ur too loud. Can get that the pops and bangs on the overrun are loads of fun but i'd grow weary after a while and itd be an expensive refit to change back.Smartbear said:

I think I've misunderstood. The back box is removed, cut open and then a piece of the perforated pipe is removed, a new section of straight pipe is welded into it's place and the back-box is welded back up again. So the back box stays where it is and the exhaust is made louder depending on how much or how many pipes are replaced.

After a week of mine being standard (both foams in), I'm going to remove one again. Far too quiet for my liking. If its too loud again, I'll try and fine tune the noise by trimming the larger foam and experimenting with positioning.

Put one bit back and it was too tame. So I fashioned my own custom foam piece from a bit of old sound insulating foam I had floating about my mancave.
It's about half the thickness of the piece that sits at the firewall and due to the square cut it doesn't 'shape seal' the resonator feed tube.
I found that it gives just the right amount of grunt when tickling the loud pedal but not too loud to be irritating long-term.
