SORNing without a garage

Anybody done this? I have a private parking space that I own, but the insurance would only let me do it with a garage. Wondered if it was worth ringing around, or maybe looking at storage, but then that negates the tax saving :?

Not heard of that one? Seems a bit odd as a lot of companies charge less to keep your car on a drive than in a garage?
Have you tried another insurer just for reference?

Statutory Off Road Notification Just means car is off the public road. So driveway, off road parking, garage etc.
not sure what the insurance has to do with it?

Haven't phoned round yet, thought it might be standard practice

It's not a private driveway, just an allocated space in a resident's car park, but according to the deeds I own it, so a bit of a grey area possibly?

You could just not insure the car, no legal requirement to insure it if it isn’t being driven. Not insuring for a shortish period (<6 months) doesn’t normally affect your NCB. The only real risk for you if the car is laid up is vandalism.

Flimper says he has an allocated car parking space that is on his deeds. That doesn't necessarily make it a private car park.

If the car park has spaces for visitors it means the public have access and the car needs to be insured.

Just to clarify, there are 6 spaces all of which are allocated, no guest spaces

I'm not sure what you mean?
Also why did you speak to the insurance?
All a sorn declaration means is that the car is not driven on or parked on the public highway.
This is only to not pay the tax.
You still need insurance against theft/fire/vandalism etc even if parked on drive in a garage or a pub car park.
I'm sure an insurance company cannot dictate on this matter.
As long as where you park it is considered to be off the public highway and classed as private land im sure you will be fine .
I sorn multiple vehicles all the time and have never given this a second thought, although they are in the garage or on the drive.

Check your policy.
Insurance companies these days do not provide cover automatically if the vehicle is SORNed. I didn't know about this until it was discussed on here a few times.
Another excuse for insurance to get more money out of us IMO. :x

I just re- read that and I don’t understand that but you are right that they seem to make life really hard with that. Unbelievable

I SORN'd mine for a month in 2021 and never even thought about insurance. But as you only have a duty of disclosure at renewal and the month was mid-term I can't see why I'd need to tell them anyway.

Mine was parked in a residents and visitors parking area, in this allocated space that was on my deeds.

I did it again for a month this year, but I've moved so it was outside my garage. Although technically it is actually communally owned as only the garage is identified on my deeds. :?

It used to be a pretty simple procedure to swap to laid-up cover and make a massive saving. Why has it got to be so complicated now?
