Sorned my zed

I sorned my zed at the end of last month as I wont be using it anytime soon. I have just received a text message from Gov.uk with a link to follow to claim my refund. The site looks legit but it asks for all my personal details including NI number, driving license number, account number, sort code, cvv number. Anyone else been asked for this?

Don't give anyone online your bank details. I believe DVLA send a cheque through the post. I might be wrong. Go to DVLA's website again and query asking for your bank details.

Are you sure you SORNed it on the Gov web site or did it via a middle man?

Last time I SORNed a car I made the declaration a got a cheque in the post a few days later - unless they have changed the way they work its a scam.

Thanks guys, this definitely looks like a scam. Amazing how easily these fraudsters obtain information, you would think government websites would have better security systems

Its possible that the site you used to SORN your car was a front site which then transferred your details to the DVLA - thats how they know you are expecting a refund.

Regardless of if you get a confirmation email from DVLA saying the car was SORNed or not (could be scam confirmation) go to the DVLA site and check the tax status of your car to confirm the SORN has gone through.

Just found an email from dvla I previously missed saying "sorn successful, any money owed will be sent to the name and address previously supplied'

The big give away here is the web address - VTAX.refund-ref2r71.com Obviously not DVLA at Gov.uk

Instances of Phishing (I think I'm right in saying) have sky-rocketed over the last few weeks apparently, so we should all be on the look out for this type of thing probably.

If you get suspicious emails or texts that say you are due money or owe money, the first thing to check should be the email address. If it is not exactly the same as the company they claim to represent, then it will be a scam. If you are not sure what the company's exact address is, then Google the company online. Usually the scammers use unusual addresses like the one that they used on this attack.

VTAX.refund-ref2r71.com is most certainly a scammers address.

Be wary, I have had three scam emails in my Junk Box in the last two weeks.
