If I buy a new car in September the first year (showroom tax they call it) is £650
When I declare a SORN in late October, do I get 10/12 of that £650?

You don't get a refund for the showroom tax as that is different from the road tax. There are two amounts involved here.

On the quotation they show :-
1st year road fund licence band K £650 as the usual annual ved is £290 I would guess I will get 10/12 of that £290 - bandits !

What was that quotation about death and taxes

Ask the garage to keep it for you untaxed until March.
No point having it for a month and then laying it up and it costing you £400.
Or can they deliver it to you untaxed and stick it in your garage till you feel you want to use it.
Or is this not possible with new cars? Must they be taxed when they are registered?

This . You'll only get the balance of the road tax , because your considered rich enough to buy a nice new car the government also considers you rich enough to pay them for the privilage of of driving it away from the showroom
