Have decided to take the plunge and get a set of MV3's for summer use and swap the Bridgestones on my 17" to Falken 439 winter boots @ £120 a piece. However I have this irrational fear of swapping to non RFT's, as the cheapest version of winter RFT's is about £200 a tyre this seems like a no brainer financially .

So is it irrational?

This is my only car, I do 25,000 miles per a annum in it, come rain or shine.

i would prefer to stick with run flats, can't be bothered with a spare or tyre weld stuff

but financially i ain't looked into it

Just get yourself some TyreWeld (currently £4 in Asda). Most places won't repair the tyre after it's had foam in it, but neither will they fix a driven-on RFT most of the time, so you're still saving yourself money by going for non-RFTs.

25000 per annum is probably a set of tyres a year, so if its a big saving then its worth it

Depends where those miles are, but Taz is quite right... You're doing a lot of miles.

My old Z4 managed 20,000 out of the rears, with plenty left on the fronts, so it may not be a set you'd need every year, but certainly at least the rears.

Can I ask a question, I've just ordered some Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's for my Z4 (2009 e89 sDrive 35i) which currently has a mismatch of Bridgestone funflats on the front and Michelin Runflats on the rear.

I've gone for non runflats mainly down to cost and from what I've read a much better ride.

My question is what tyre pressure do I need to set the NON Runflats to? Will it be different to the runflats?

Also will it affect the TPMS?

Thanks

David

Thanks for the responses guys, the miles are by and large motorway miles, having 225/45/R17 front and rear, I swapped them and as such managed to obtain 42,000 miles on them with 3mm of tread left all round. Thus the winter tyres will probably last the life of my tenure of it, as will the MV3's from flea-bay if chosen correctly, so no real financial cost over three years.

David, there are numerous posts about non RFT's and I believe most have increased the pressure slightly to compensate, problem is that the only way your going to know if you have over inflated them is if you wear the middle out quicker than the edge, if that makes any kind of sense.

A tyre fitter told me that someplaces are beginning to repair run flat punctures. Depends on where the puncture is and you sign a disclaimer to say you've only driven within a certain distance and not exceeded 50mph. How you fare with the insurance company if you have an accident i don't know.

As for non RF. Apparently there are two types of foam that can be used in non run flats when a puncture occurs; oil based foam means the tyre is ruined; water based foam can be washed out doesn't affect the tyre integrity and in theory the tyre can be repaired. Knowing which tyre foam is which is not that easy apparently.
I don't know how true that is but it sounds feasible and also like something the tyre industry won't be telling people in a hurry.
If anyone is in the tyre business and can shed light on the subject....?

umm the big question

check with insurance as this is a non oem modification, may mean nothing but better to be safe

I only do 12K so messing arround is not worth the hastle

HOWEVER

my last 3 mk1 2.5 z4's I normally got 30K front 20K back so one full set in the life I own the z4 (2 yrs)

but the last ate a rear set in 10k. at £500 for the pair was hard to swallow. the fronts have done 10K (had to change front and back for £700) but she is toeing in so inner edge has no tread left even though most of the middle and outer edge is over 6mm. So not breaking the law but when i came to trade it in this week was pointed out and bmw would need to chhange the tyres. If I continued the ware would start to eat into the case and into the coards.

SO for me in 12 months I would have fitted 2 full sets at £1,400 cost. I was also lucky where a puncture was repairable, otherwise add another £250

My new z4 is 10 plate and done 9K so I will wait and see how these ware. will not keep them if I cant get 20K out of them.
So
