Software upgrade

I've been a bit of a moaning so-and-so about how crap the Navigation is in my car (the mapping, not the system itself).

Anyway, the dealer promised a free upgrade at new release time, so last year I was given 07-02 disk. Nope - still rubbish.

I was then given 08-01 a few weeks ago - still had addresses and roads missing.

Anyway, long story short, after investigating, I've been told I need a software upgrade on my car, and they need it in for half a day? What the??

I'm being informed that once the upgrade has been done, all the missing addresses will appear and my system will be tip top.

Now am I being over cynical here when I say this sounds like a load of crap? I have the latest MkIV software for the nav screen anyway. What I can't understand is why they need the car for half a day?

Sounds strange to me too. The last time I upgraded my nav software I simply inserted the new disc and waited 30 seconds or so until it installed.

If you have the most up to date software in the car already there is no other upgrade that can be done to bring up an address that doesn't feature on the map dvd already. If they were installing the latest software onto your Mk IV nav unit, as Curtis says, it would take a couple of minutes.

A lot of these dealers have a basic lack of knowledge on how these cars work, I've encountered it several times since I got the Z4. On zed-cars someone's been told that they have to have a software update for their bluetooth module to make it compatible with their phone, pretty hard seeing as the module cannot be upgraded without the module itself being replaced for the latest version.

Ask them exactly what software they intend installing, I think the latest software for a Mk IV is 4-1/91. To get the software version hit the 'Menu' key, then select settings, it's displayed in the top right corner.

And then ask them how it's going to bring up addresses that weren't their before. Dealer BS IMO.

It can only be the software for the MKIV, i.e. the 30 seconds job. New addresses can not be added to the DVD, but it might be possible that more info can be read by a newer release of the software.

Remote chance, but that is all I can think of.

Yep - you're confirming my thoughts too.

I did a MkIV upgrade myself previously (to 1/91) and as said, its a 30 seconds job.

This is one of the reasons I don't like built-in-car navigation systems. What you've got your stuck with! I prefer my Tom Tom unit to be honest! At least I can just replace it if it's no good!

But the BMW one isn't bad at all, I've travelled in the UK and Europe with it and the directions have been spot on. If you have the latest software and map disc it's a decent bit of equipment and you've got the OEM look with no trailing wires or the constant fear of theft. I admit it's too expensive as a new option but then I don't buy my cars new.

The problem senwar has is with the information on the map disc IMO, not with the actual system.

Yes, thats true.

The system itself is excellent - quick and easy to use. The issue I have stems from when I first got it and it didn't find a number of addresses. Also, an established main road outside my house is listed as road number not road name which is ridiculous. So yes, its the mapping that frustrates me.
