Soft top manual over ride - how do you reattach motors?!

Hello

I did a silly thing the other day and pulled the red soft top manual over ride wire in the boot that disconnects the motors from the hood (incase the motors fail) and now my soft top does not opperate (as expected). My question is how to I re attached the hood to the motors? The motors work fine -I was trying to stop a rattle when for some reason decieded to pull it.... hmm.

I am assuming it must be fairly simple but thought I would check on here before I started taking the car appart!

its an 04 reg 2.2 z4

Many thanks
Oliver

I thought you just needed to put the red pull clip back in it's holder?

Something is wrong with my roof at the moment, as you say Hosse, the motors are working (mine was replaced a little while back) but it now doesn't work - started being a little tempremental and then went. Suspect the hydraulics. Need to have a proper look though. When the red clip is pulled out I can easily move the roof up and down. When it is in, which it has popped in once or twice, the roof will not push back up, I am guessing the motor / hydraulics have engaged but aren't working.

I'll bet as a wild guess that you have to strip the car down enough, or find some small access hole ,to get to the motor to twist a lever operated valve back to its start position. I'm sure someone who had had the motor in their hand will confirm.

I think it's supposed to be emergency only and be pulled if the motor fails and oyu need to get the hodd fully up or down.

I pulled the red handle in mine whilst trying to fix the roof once - the motor worked, but the roof stayed put.

I pushed the red pull cord back in its holder, and hey presto, the roof worked.

Perhaps I was lucky? :o

anyone know how to re-attach the system if you have pulled the red lever then?
You diont have to "re-attach" anything. The bowden cable pulls a lever that presses a spring-loaded button on the pump to put it in bypass mode. The red lever needs to be pulled and twisted 90° to latch open, if you twist it back it engages in a slot in its bracket and the spring pulls it back in.

Of course, if you have a typical aquatic Z4 hydraulic motor, your bypass switch may be corroded. I couldnt get my roof to bypass until I took the motor out and cleaned up and re-greased the button (this was a by-product of repairing the entire pump), all ok now.

The red handle only moves about 15mm and the lever it activates is very soft bendy plastic, so it is difficult to know where the end points are
