sobering experience

out with dave the diver in his sl55 amg, i have always said its a bit of a grandads grand tourer, well there we were alongside each other 80mph empty dual carriageway, knocked the m from 6th to fourth and floored it......... :tumbleweed: the amg just reached into the bowells of hell and pulled out a couple of hundred extra tourques and left the m for dead' knew it was gonna happen , but i was still as sick as a girraffe with a stiff neck  funny, i still prefer the m tho

I have chased a few AMGs at the 'Ring (C63, E63, E55, etc.) and whilst they accelerate out of corners and pull well on the straights, they still hold me up on the corners. So once I manage to pass them I can normally pull away by carrying more speed through the corners.

Don't forget that along with all that torque, the AMG will have probably kicked down to 3rd before going back into 4th.

If you'd gone down to 3rd too, you may not have lost as much ground.

I think you mean 80kph ;)

My friend has a slk55... And while mine isnt an M in the real world he "smokes" me!

I had a play once with a E63 in my old cerb & the AMG's may weight a fair bit but boy do they shift & I bottled a little fun with a CLK 55 in my M3...the problem with a N/A M car is they don't have lots of torque imo so you have to be around 6k revs before they get up & go & that means lots of cog swapping! :driving:

I had exactly the opposite experience on a twisty-ish, erm, track. He was just all over the place through the corners and i walked past him.

that makes me feel a lot better, deffo a lack of torque in the m compared with a v8, but still a sweet engine that loves being revved, guess i need to rev it a bit more, no what you mean in the bends though.

The SL is a sodding tank of a car, awful on B roads, plus you need to be at least 50 to own one!

I say good riddance, he might have you for torque, but you still have the better car

As most of the above have said, the car would have been much more responsive in third and you may have found yourself equally matched - fourth founders at that speed and really doesn't pull hard until you're well into three figures.
