so what's the deal with the 2.5 engine?

How many versions are there on the Z4, I'm a bit confused? I've seen on a list from BMW for 170hp, for 190hp, one for 218hp and may be even more powerful one in Si?

Is the 170hp worth trying at all? Mind, i'm looking for a car with step, not manual as I have much city driving and as much as i liked to have manuals in the past, i've found that manual is just not good for me at this point (for my needs). I won't be tracking the car. So considering its' slower and thirstier, how much worse is the 170hp vs 190hp? Or is the 2.5 litre 170HP is the one that's in the 2.2??? Is consumption fairly similar on all 2.5s regardless of power? Is there anything people do to their 2.5s to get them faster? Or just get 3.0? :D

Seriously mate if you're asking that there's no point messing around, just get the 3.0! :poke:

Very pleased with my 2.5 95% of the time until occasionally I get whipped in a straight line... but I've snuck onto the M section of the forum a couple times and even they have the same - there's always something faster. But if you're asking then you want the 3.0 or you'll spend too much time wishing you did. I certainly wouldn't be messing around with a 2.5 engine.

i guess there is a hefty price premium on the 3.0 hence not only engine is bigger, they seem to come loaded with options as well which all add to the price. On average I've seen the 3l versions of cars of same year hear fetch 5-7 th euros more. that's rediculous.:)

Mind, i drove the 2.5 Z4 and it's many times nicer than the 325i which felt slow and comparable to 320d. :P May be the key is just not to try the 3.0 and not to spoil the experience.

But i guess i understood correclty - the 2.5 with 170hp is really the Z4 2.2?

No! The 2.2 is the 2.2.

Pre-facelift 2.5 192bhp
Post-facelift 2.5i 177bhp
Post-facelift 2.5Si 218bhp

Edited to add the rest

Pre-facelift 2.2 170bhp
Pre-facelift 3.0 231bhp
Post-facelift 3.0Si 265bhp
Post-facelift 2.0 150bhp

what's the point of LCI 2.5 with LESS HP than the pre-LCI car?... sorry if this is ignorant, may be it was answered before. Just puzzling.

Better MPG, better emissions, replaced the 2.2 after the facelift, cheaper.

gotcha.thanks!

Mine is 2.5i manual (177 hp). If you want 2.5i with autobox, you really need a 2.5si.

Power, 0-62 mph, combined mpg are as follows:
Post-facelift 2.0i 150 hp, 8.2 sec, 38.2 mpg.
Post-facelift 2.5i 177 hp, 7.1 sec (7.7 sec), 34.4 mpg (33.6 mpg).
Post-facelift 2.5Si 218 hp, 6.5 sec (6.9 sec), 34.0 mpg (32.5 mpg).
Post-facelift 3.0Si 265 hp, 5.7 sec (6.0 sec), 33.2 mpg (32.1 mpg).

Values in () to vehicles with six-speed automatic gearbox.

So you getting a 3.0 or what

still looking buddy, nothing is decided yet. :? 8)

ksher, any data on the 192 HP 2.5i? How does Automatic compares to the manual?

BTW, any of you peeps tried to chip tune your cars? i see that the 2.5i (most likely option i guess i'm looking at) is gona go from 192 to 210hp with a chip, which is pretty impresive for a NA engine. Even the 170hp 2.2 goes up to 185hp.

The brochure I have for pre-facelift has no mpg, only shows 2.5i has 192 bhp/6000 rpm, and with top speed of 146 mph (141 mph). Manual does 0-62 mph in 7.2 seconds (no figure for auto). I think auto will be near to 8.0 sec.

bloody hell, that's slow. well that's a big YES to chip tuning now. :whip:

EDIT: according to this, automatic does it in 7.5sec which probably will be around 7.2 with chip. can't be too bad this.

get 3.0 you won't regret it!! i was in the same position as you and wasn't sure whether to get the 2.5 or 3.0. i'm soooooo glad i went with 3.0! :D

What about a 3.0 SMG? Faster than auto, and can be switched to fully auto mode in city traffic.

Frankly I'd skip the SMG. I don't think it was ever really a great success on the Z4 and was dropped from the range.

With a standard prefacelift auto doing the 0-60 run in 6.2 (manual 5.9) it's no slouch. I actually think the auto will in most real world situations leave the manual standing as it's in the right gear instantly and flatters the driver by laying the power down real quick.

IMHO worth stepping up from the 2.5 to the 3.0 if you're going the auto route.

Only downside I see is that the tax band is higher for the 3.0 auto.
