So i'll be needing an undertray then

Mostly Holland. Sometimes UK.
Previous owner neglected to inform me of the lack of an undertray.
Suspected cooling problems when i started poking around back in august etc.
Which bits do i need?

Think its the 2 biggest sections indicated at realoem...?
And for the sharpeyed, yes the oil residue is from the leaky oilfilter housing gasket.

You also seem to be missing the oil drain cover. A little plastic door that covers the sump drain area.

Looks like a lazy mechanic couldn't be bothered putting the covers etc back on. Depending on who's been working on, it the previous owner may well have been oblivious. A respected BMW Specialist in Manchester told me they see this a lot, especially with cars coming from Williams BMW Main Dealers locally, shocking really!

There you go, surprisingly fiddly parts that never seem to want to go back :headbang:

My first Z was missing the undertray when I bought it, and I never noticed till months later. I think you need this :

Engine compartment screen (the plastic under tray) - 51717012723

Though mine was a facelift they are probably the same. It was £120 or so at the time, back in 2012, so I'd brace yourself for a big number...

Let the air at it is what I say. Currently my one is off the car. Much easier to work on. You will need part 7 on the diagram and also eight mms lock screws. Don't remove the slam panel. One of the bolts fractured in my one. Picture of the strip

I think many of them don't get fully fitted back after servicing then suffer road damage or damaged at speed then out of sight out of mind...

That parts missing won't be doing you any favours on aero, fuel economy or even the cooling you were talking about on another thread. You do right to replace it

I think you need to take a good look underneath and see which clips are left on the 'chassis', edge of the bumper, cross member and then buy a handful of the matching self tapping bolts and spring clips. I can see them on the cross member, but all are missing from the rear edge of the bumper cover.

An undertray would be handy Chris to catch all the bits that rattle off your engine! :poke:
hahaha u fkr! u just couldn't resist that one could you? like a red rag to a bull, sigh.

thanks all!
for the amount of fiddly bits n pieces I'm tempted just to measure up the mounting points available and fab up an ally panel.
The main function is aero and to stop ingress to the engine bay so it doesnt have to be too hi-tech i think.
got fabrication company down the road from us and a DIY garage with lifts the other way so shouldnt be too difficult.....

looks like the original forward panel was just cut away rather than unbolted. how fekin lazy is that?? the upside is that at least there's a bunch of bolts i can re-use. yay

hmm the big bit from Ekris BMW comes in at €88 inc tax. Not bad.
No part 8 available tho weirdly.
Reckon on about €200 for all bits and bumflufferies to do it the 'parts' way.
Now to see how much for an aluminium panel to get fabbed up....

Probably just fell down at the rear end on a road and had to be hacked off quickly
Pretty crude though

Should maybe have also mentioned that the reason for addressing this is that I'm a bit paranoid about kittycats climbing up into the engine bay to keep warm during winter evenings if I've been out during the day etc. Then me getting in next day with the cat still in the engine bay!

Was out biking round the Maximapark last summer when I came accross this poor little fella. He was limping rather forlornly along the path and I could tell something was up with it as I passed so I turned around to investigate. The whole side of his little belly had been skinned/degloved, possibly due to exactly the thing I'm a bit paranoid about - having a relatively easy-to-access and sometimes warm engine bay then falling out as I'm driving along.

Fortunately, I found him and tried to do all I could for him until the 'dierenambulance' (pet ambulance) came and just before he managed to crawl into the bushes to die. Apparently animals do this when they know time's time - at least that was the vet's theory. Also fortunate was the fact that he was tagged so the vet could contact the owner but sadly it passed away 2 days later.

Sorry for the gruesome photos but hopefully it may inspire others who dont have an undertray to be a bit more wary/vigilant....

Hells Bells Chris - perhaps a warning next time before pics of mangled kittens
You'll have us all crawling under our cars every morning checking for critters :(

Sorry fella. removed the 2nd photo.
kind of the point really tho to make the 'zedders sans undertray' to be a bit more wary....

I will certainly be checking if I'm sans an under-tray
