So here's the dilemma......

My old mum is seriously ill and it falls to me to do some caring. Fine with that no trouble.

She lives I a rough inner city council estate ( I'm the lad that 'did good'), it's 60 miles from home and regular overnight stays will be definitely on the cards for at least the next 4 months.

I'm not happy putting the miles on my daily nor do I want to risk the natives marking their territory on my paintwork. So I'm thinking of a cheap runner to do the job. The old dear thinks I should stay in a hotel but that's just not a good idea for obvious reasons

So ideas for a cheap reliable car for 120 mile commutes that wide boy chavs won't want to use as target practice would be appreciated, ideally sub £1200 and low tax and insurance.

I'm thinking polo, ka, fiesta on one level (literally) or modus or jazz a little higher and hence easier access post surgery.

Ps if anyone has anything the want to deal with my mini ( in for sale section) then please get in touch

Thanks.

Seriously ..... I know the situation intimately ...... solved the problem with an old Volvo Estate .... totally chav free motoring, peanuts to buy

Volvo would be too big to fit on the drive our end. We already have too many cars! Hadn't thought about the Clio. Don't know much about them?

That's Tim line!

The M135i put paid to that :)

Seriously though looking after a relative when working full time is bloody hard work so sympathise with the OP.

A Hyundai i10 or 20 would be a decent choice, no street cred which is what you want :)

Tim.

Clio is boring but so boring it will be left alone. You'd be able to pick up a Campus which was the name given to the 3rd gen? Clio when they started producing it along side the previous model. They were cheap to buy and run and cheap to pick up now. I had to drive my Grandads on occasion. Makes you appreciate what you've got!

Can only see Getz for what I want to spend. Sub £1200 ideally

Thanks anyway

I remember when I used to drive sub £500 throw away cars, I'm still surprised what you can get for very little cash.

Ignis - nothing to look at, I bought my mum one about 3 years ago, touch wood 20k later and other than a set of tyres it hasn't cost her a penny

I second the volvo shout... quality motors, that are just not going to get nicked or damaged, as they attract zero attention.

In regards to a Jazz, I can't help but think:

dont get an old clio. its the worse car i have ever owned, and other people i know who have them getting seem to have the same issues when old.

my vote is for anything that is not french/italian if your looking for old cars.

Problem solved, hopefully

I've run several sheds to commute in and find that trying to find a particular model for your budget leads to frustration and overlooking problems with potential cars. At this budget even respected brands/models can be trouble so it's better to buy on condition and mileage. I'd try autotrader and just stick in your budget, max miles on the car, how far you will travel and maybe the max road tax cost and see what comes up. a quick run for your requirements within 50 miles gives a couple of ideas,

My mate just bought one of these for the door access and it's actually surprising OK
