Snow Socks

A friend has Autosock's and rates them highly, I've bought a pair for my Audi to keep in the boot.
They are just a "get me out of the situation" solution, which is all I'm after really as these modern "ecologically friendly" tyres are pants in the snow.

My original plan was to try them (or the Goodyear synthetic/composite 'chains') to see how the Z4 was in winter and then decide whether I needed winter wheels & tyres as well.

Still got them in the unopened bags after 4 years, but have not been in a situation where I needed to use them - and that includes driving in a bit of snow.

I only have chains & winter tyres as I drive in Europe & reasonable distances in the UK by choice.

If you have the option, I'd say save your money, stock up in the house before, leave the car at home when it snows and use public transport when it gets bad even if it is pants. Least then you never have to abandon your car as I've seen JCB's moving those left blocking roads, other road users on summer tyres slide into others and on foot you have options...

i have a st in the boot just in case i get stuck,,, but as above ift its that bad i will get the metro

Only had one instance in the past few years where I think they would have come in use. I was stuck in B'ham airport long stay car park after leaving the zed there for a week, and there had been a lot of snow falling. I used something similar that I picked up in Switzerland before flying back - it got me out of the car park and onto the gritted roads, where I then removed them before setting off home. They've been in the boot ever since.

Useful for getting out of snowy/icy situations, but you can only use them up to about 10mph, so an emergency solution only. Not a substitute for a proper winter tyre setup

[EDITED for auto-carrot]

I bought a pair for the 1 Series when we had the bad winter of 2010 and after I got stuck and was off the road for 3 weeks. Once the snow had cleared I tried to test fit them at home, it was still freezing cold and have to say they were a complete pain to fit over the 18s with the lower suspension. The problem is getting your hands in the arch and trying to get the sock around the back of the wheel, there is a knack and I'm sure after countless practices it would become easier, but then I thought on a bad snowy day, possibly at the side of the road, freezing icy slush, great, no way. The following year I bought a set of BMW winter wheels and it never snowed :headbang: This year I've left the Z4 in the garage and fitted some cheaper aftermarket alloys on the Z3. I really wouldn't bother with the socks, better to walk :)
