Snow Performance ?

I have been on winters for a month, and I am papping myself about driving in winter after reading so many horror stories. We live in a village with ungritted roads on a hill.
Anyway, husband keeps telling me it will be fine it's just scaremongering... at the same time he hasn't offered to swap cars :(.

DTC will let the wheels spin to a degree, whereas if you just have traction fully on it will just bog down completely. You have to be careful though as although DTC will let you scramble your way through deeper snow, it will also let you spin out of control that bit easier! :-s correct me if I'm wrong but hope that helps.

Thanks :). Is there also something about one or two presses. One for snow, and two for taking it off completely and ending up in a ditch ?
 
Yep that's the one NDB ;-) holding it down turns the lot off and I'd avoid that ... Also it is for being a prat on your own (obviously not speaking from experience) :-)

NDB as long as you are sensible you should be OK. I drove mine in the show last year - and it really surprised me. That said, living in the sticks meant that I wasn't risking the other idiots on the road sliding into me!

I suppose the only time I have made a car actually do a 180 was taking my MR2 roadster ( which was an only summer car ) out on a very icy day on Summer tyres.
 
If they're anything like my 325 it's pretty much all scaremongering. I never came close to crashing in two years of winters on summer tyres - you're far more likely to have trouble moving than crashing.

Having said that, the only time I got stuck was when I was trying to bump up a kerb in about 2 inches of snow and trying to get off the icy drive which is a really steep angle. Once you're moving there's not really any problem.

Keep the revs low (pull off in 2nd and change quickly to 3rd) and if you start struggling rock the car back and forth until you get out of the rut you'll have dug yourself. I kept a shovel, snow socks and some bits of old carpet in the boot just in case but I never used them. Another trick I used is to put something heavy in the boot, I used all of the spare weights for my Dad's dumbells and a load of snorkelling gear mainly because they were heavy and already in bags so easy to throw in. I'm not sure how much difference this made but I haven't got stuck after adding it.

These cars will never be as good as a front engined, front drive car with 3 inch wide tyres but they're not as bad as people make out.
 
One tip for driving in snow is to turn the stereo off.

You can hear the engine revving up if you're wheelspinning before you can feel it unless you are a driving god.

This too. Or watch the rev counter if you're stationary.
