 Droppped the better half at work and then drove to work- Z was ok in the snow (just a few difficulites caused by other muppets that cant cope with snow!) School closed when I got there ( im a deputy head) but having had to drift the car into teh car park at the oot of a hill I,ve had to leave it! For future use is it worth using snow chains? Do these give u grip thats usable and do they damage ur wheels?

Problem with snow chains, as I understand it, is that they can damage the tyres after prolonged use - they dig into the tyres. Although that was many many years ago, they may perform better now. Snow socks might be the answer - was in Italy a couple days ago trying to find a resort with ski lifts open and saw a car with them on, so they can't be too bad.

Anyway, the link's on here, courtesy of mmm-five:

Snow chains or the softer snow-socks can simply be carried and fitted when you need them.

It may also be a good investment to get a set of winter wheels & tyres - 16" ones would fit over brakes for winter use (start of November to end of January) and would be considerably cheaper than 18" ones.

I had wondered about snow chains, but stumbled across this snow sock which seems easier to fit and claims to be as good as snow chains:

I think if this weather is going to persist, it might be a worthwhile investment. The UK site is down at the moment though! :x

16" - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-Z4-Alloys-Bridgestone-Tyres-Excellent-Condition_W0QQitemZ140371087171QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Rims_Car_Wheels_ET?hash=item20aec4cf43#ht_956wt_1080
No reserve! Although a while to go yet.

In contrast a single 103 17" is advertised for £70 (£150 buy it now) for 1 wheel

To think I was going to offer my spare set of Z4MC wheels for £350 - at that price for a 17" 103 I'd better double my asking price :P

I think he's dreaming - I bought my set of 103s for around £125 I think. If you are thinking of moving on your spare M wheels... dibs

i had to leave my Z as well, in the garage all tucked away. Took the wifes cooperS instead. Not too bad in the snow if your moving, but already had it stuck in the snow twice outside work. Measured it outside and its almost 9" here in manchester! glad i left the zed in the garage after all.

I am, but it's only the wheels and not for a week or two while I use the last of the tread that's on them - at a marshal's track day later in the month, although with the way work is I might not even be able to afford that.

I'll PM you when I decide - either way it's be before the end of January.

I'm North Manchester and in the same boat, driving wasn't really a sensible option this morning so I walked to work (luckily it's only about 2 miles). This was the car at about 8am, it's been snowing for most of the day since this was taken:

Well thisis where it was- the snow got deeper by the next day and was covering the doors! Dug it out and got it to my mates garage- gonna try and get it home today!
