Snapped spring - warranty?

Snapped rear spring - can I claim this under warranty? I had a dealership one for the year, just expired, which I've now renewed (fully comprehensive/no excess).

Didn't know whether this is seen as 'wear and tear' or a valid claim these days? Car is 58k miles. Thanks.

At 58k I would be surprised if that is still on its original springs, OEM springs suck.
My car is also '58k and has gone through 3 sets since new. Now on Eibachs

Mine were at over 50k before I replaced mine, at my own cost as they hadn't snapped, but I thought that 50k was old enough.

I think one of mine may be, as if i push up and down on the rear right of the car there is a squeak as it goes up...
might not be but who knows
i ll find out in spring during inspection twoooo

I too have a squeak from the rear but when getting into the car so on the way down not up, might this be a spring gone?

IIRC, the OEM springs are Eibachs... :?

The squeak could just be the hand break. Try leaving it in gear instead next time you stop. See if it still squeaks.
I've had one broken spring which was found at an MOT. It was clear to see. The rear springs are easy enough to replace, I ended up doing both sides and now have a spare used one. So should another spring break in the future I can put the worn one in.

Yes the squeek is the handbreak as you say , but I remember when speaking to z owners before buying one and being told that rear springs are prone to breaking , although I'm not sure wether they really knew this was really the case or wether it was a 'squeek' caused by handbrake. One owner even said breakages are caused by gravel hitting the rear springs , surely not.

Searched, and googled, have found nothing to support your statement, but happy to be prooved wrong.
If it is indeed true then they must be supplying BMW with inferior products.

I also have the squeak from the rear when i get out of the car.

However, i know my rear springs are intact because i had new rear tyres fitted on Tuesday and looked at the rear springs whilst the wheels were off.

Interesting to note that the paint had failed and was peeling off in the area where they are prone to break on both sides.

Chicken or egg?

The paint is only cosmetic, and normally starts falling off after about a year/10,000 miles.

The paint is only cosmetic, but its only coming off where the spring breaks. That means that the paint is coming off because the spring is doing most of its flexing in that area (hence leading to the breakage)OR the spring is breaking because its weakened by the lack of paint in that area.

Maybe even a combination of the two.

I'm just thinking aloud as to whether cleaning off the corrosion and repainting the springs will extend their life.

Would a broken spring cause the rear end to "squeak"?

95% of squeaky rear ended posts are handbreak related immho ... it's another Zed "feature"

To clear the whole matter of possible broken springs up I will find out more when I take my mc to be serviced this month at Gugliemi's in Daventry .
