I recently bought a 2003 z4 and after getting it running I am now unable to get the car into gear. It is a 2003 2.5 with smg, sport package, and premium package. I can here the smg pump cycle when I unlock the car. The dash lights display check engine and the transmission light is on but the car hasn't moved for over a year now so they could just be service. The right center gear display shows "N" to the left of that it shows "F", I can not find anything on what that F means. I've never owned a bmw before, is there a step by step process for starting the car that should always work assuming there is nothing wrong? Also I know the doors must be closed in order to change out of neutral but what about the hood, and/or trunk? Do those also need to be closed? Any help is greatly appreciated.
