Hi guys,
Hope you are all well
I own a BMW z4 from 2004, 2.5i with an SMG gearbox. (Yes a SMG
)
After 277k on the clock i thought it would be a good thing to renew the clutch on the SMG. Since i had the judder issue and i read that renewing the clutch will do the trick.
After finding a garage (who has a lot of good recommendations) i decided to go for the repair.
Just to say: they whole thing took over a month :thumbsdown: , 1st they placed a none OEM clutch that just did not shift at all, then after 3 weeks waiting the OEM clutch arrived (import from Germany) and they replaced it. After testing it they said: "its up and running again like new". It seems they mis-judged the SMG repair, the garage guys are nice people and do really want to help me out the best they can, but repairing a SMG car aint their cup of tea i noticed.
Yesterday i received my Z again, and yes it does look like the car response better in the shifting, up-shifting from 1 to 6 all looks fine, the judder is completely gone.
But: When you manually or automatically shift down from 5th to 4th (even from 5th to 3th) it seems like the gearbox make a grinding sound \ its a hard sound. It feels \ sounds like it has troubles to reverse from 5th to any lower gear, findiing the right slot (if there is anything like that). I read that its mandatory to bleed the clutch and reset all adaptive settings via the IPNA tool and i know for sure that the garage guys did not do this, since they dont have these tools. After calling them today, they said: "The clutch needs to settle in a little, its new and the oil etc need to get use to the new parts, just drive a few days, if it remains we start taking steps". I'm sure that this ain't a "settle in" :? issue, its either the software or they (the garage) again seemed to fail on the hardware repair part".
What do you all think \ recon ? Something on the hardware making this sound due to lack on knowledge on how to place the clucth? , or could this be the SMG gearbox not knowing when the shift efficiently since the system was used to a worn clutch?
Please advise, i dont want to lose my car for another 3 weeks. :|
* Im about to buy a laptop incl. the IPNA \ ODB2 and do the reset myself, since the steps are quite easy and straight forward.
Kind regards,
Paul
