Sloshing liquid sound behind passenger footwell in Z4

Hi fellow Z4 owners, last week I bought my first BMW, a Z4 3.0 2003 plate and I love it.

However I noticed what can only be described as a water sloshing sound coming from infront of the passanger left side of footwell (RHD car). I can hear it when I brake and accelerate, like shaking a half full bucket of water. It's bugging me, does any body know what it could be? Are there are fluids/tanks there? Cheers for any help or suggetions you may have.
 
You sure it is not the petrol slushing about? Sounds travel very deceivingly.
 
Def not petrol as tank is in back... unless i have a major leak !! I filled up the tank yesterday, and the sound is still a half empty sloshing sound.
 
Can you replicate the sound by getting out of the car, and pushing the passenger side of the car to make it "rock" ? Have the bonnet open at the same time as well so you can see if any reservoir is making that noise.
 
That's really an odd one. Don't be deceived by the supposed logical location of the noise. I had a bottle of water in the storage box behind the passenger seat and it sounded like water in the dashboard. Of course I realised what and where it was, but the point is that the sound 'travelled' to appear from elsewhere.
 
You might want to check the drain for the wiper motor/ heater intake compartment isn't blocked. It's a rubber tube on the bulkhead with a flap on the end and when it gets blocked with leaves n stuff water stays trapped in the heater compartment and sloshes around. Sorry I don't have a pic but I'm sure sombody who knows what I'm talking about will.
 
Could it be the condinsation water for the AC isn't raining?? I don't think it would be that much water but that would be the right place.

Well, just a thought but, the heater core is over there and if the coolant level is a bit low, there will be air in the system that will sound like water rushing through a pipe when you accelerate or decelerate.
 
funny you should mention that, I get the very same thing in my Mini Cooper!

will check the coolant level now you mention it, definitley comes from near the passenger footwell
 
I have the same issue.
I know that bmw somehow fixed this. The process described in tis document: B 16 200 03 Z4 Noise from Fuel Tank 19-Aug-2003

But I can't find this doc in th inernet and in TIS 2007.

Please share whith me.

This, but there's two drains.

Stand at the front, bonnet open, lean right forward and look to the left and right about a third way down the bulkhead, there's 2 rubber flaps. They get blocked with leaves and the water can't drain away, I used an old BBQ sqewer to clean out.

May be worth a check.
 
Hi Folks,

After the rain of the last few days, I now also have a Sloshing sound which appears to be running around the O/S however it sounds like its flowing around the car. So accelerating, its rear, braking its front. Can't hear anything N/S.

So far I have cleared the hood drains (they weren't bad to be honest, used the well tested method of rod and hoover & then tested and flowing fine), I've removed the wiper facia and all dry in there, Cleared the two bulk head drains as described above (one as badly blocked but the other clear, some water flowed out). Lone behold the water is still trapped somewhere.

At this point very things still working. The cabin and boot is completely dry.

Any idea's??? :cry: :cry: :cry:
 
Many have experienced this problem with heavy rains, water is somehow backing into the quarter panel and draining into rocker panels. Under each side of the car there is a small plastic plate for the jack to be positioned. Slide them forward or side to side or pop them loose and the water should escape. You can also drill a hole in them to prevent further problems but no guaranty they wont get stopped up with debris. Don't get wet ;)
 
had this exactly in mrs mad 4's tigra, there are some rubber bungs underneath each sill, also the sills had little flanges beneath them like two edges of metal crimped together , and the drain slots get clogged with underseal and water cant escape. have a look could well be the same thing, there was a lot of water in the sill and really sloshed abour on accelleration and braking :thumbsup:
