Slightly peculiar HID issue?

Okay so I'll start by saying I've never been the biggest fan of aftermarket HID kits and the glare the bad one's (especially in reflector headlights) can cause to other road users.
That said, with every other vehicle I own having xenons now (hell, even the tractor has HIDs!) and with living out in the sticks where there's no light pollution and no streetlights whatsoever, the Z4s halogen candles can be bordering on downright dangerous so I've decided to give a HID kit a chance.

BUT! I seem to be having an issue where once both lights are plugged in, I start the car, turn on the headlights and they flicker once before staying turned off. Has anyone else had anything like that occur before?

My first thoughts were I'd cocked up the wiring although swapping polarity just prevented them from turning on all together. I then tried plugging them in individually and at this point each bulb works just fine in either side headlights which confused me somewhat!

For what it's worth the kit in question is a 55w 4300k kit from HIDs Direct, many thanks in advance!

Yes, I had an issue with flickering and not lighting up. I had to buy a small ballast to add to the current hid kit wiring which sorted it out. I got this from hids direct, though I can't remember what it was called.

They never seemed to work perfectly on the auto lights setting though, so I removedthem
them.

From reading online, I came to the conclusion that some hid kits don't like being installed in vehicles that have 'auto lights'.

If you turned the lights on and off manually, they would work fine, so it definitely is something to do with that.

Edit: Just had a quick search and this is the type of thing I bought. In the product decription it says it will fix the sort of problems you are having.

i fitted mine last night and have noticed that when they 1st go on the flicker once then take a second or two to "warm up" and get to full brightness, i assume thats normal?

was a 55w 6000K kit from HIDs-Direct

Many thanks for the help so far guys!
I also contacted HID's Direct, mentioned your point about the decoders Ben although they reckon the kit should already have them built in, so it sounds like it may just be a faulty kit and they've offered to exchange it for a new one. I must commend their customer service as I didn't even suggest a replacement kit and they also got back to me exceptionally quickly

Oh ok, thats good of them! Hopefully your new set will be OK. Let me know and if so, i'll order a set for myself. I miss my hid's!

HIDs Direct seem very good to deal with - I had the wrong colour burners sent, replacements arrived the next day.

I had this on a 5 series a few years ago, hid direct supplied, turns out I needed the digital ballast to work with canbus. The digital ones worked perfect.
