Sky Installation - New Build House

Hi guys,

Thought I would try and pick all your brains and see if anyone has experience with having a sky dish installed at a new build property.

We are due to move into our new house in 2 weeks time (providing the solicitors pull their finger out and get everything done for the completion in time). The house already has a "media plate" fitted in the lounge, with TV/FM/SAT 1/SAT 2 connections. Which is connected to an amplifier/splitter in the loft.

From reading various bits of info on the Sky website and when I spoke to them about our house move, it seems that they will not connect up to box in the loft (due to skys health and safety policy not allowing the fitter to go into the loft) and instead will run cables on the outside of the house and drill a nice hole through the wall of my lovely new home.

Obviously I would rather not have additional holes drilled in my lounge wall, so I was wondering if anyone here had any experience of whether the Sky installer will in actual fact connect it up internally instead of running cables and drilling holes?!

The house we're moving to is in Longstanton, Cambs, if anyone has any experience of the area!

If you are moving and already have the appropaite sky connections can you not just connect the box up yourself and notify sky of the change of address ? Unless of course you need a new dish as I am pretty sure they wont do anything to help unless the dish is installed by one of there approved installers.

I refused to let the installer fit it how he wanted, eventually he agreed to leave a roll of cable with me for a bit to put it where/how I wanted it and fill in the forms to say the cable was already in place. When he got back he just attached the dish and plugged it in.

Was a bit of a pain having to do it myself, but better than his plan if having cables just thrown over the roof and holes all over.

Me to... I prepared the 'holes' in advance through the house.

I just told the guy when he turned up that the cables were going through the house, I did the pulling & clambering about inside & he did the rest.

Provided a cup of tea, mars bar & use of my loo ... didn't hear a single complaint from the fitter, so I would forget the people at the end of the phone line.

As others have said - suggest to the fitter how you'd like cables routed, offer to do the loft crawling and I'm sure you won't have any problems.

just be aware that they are on a very tight time schedule, so they won't wait around for you (well not for too long).

My suggestion would deb to get a profession fitter do the work, the way you want it done. Sky fitting and their H&S regs are a nightmare, and you'll probably find that they don't fit the dish very high and only in an easy to get to place - so an unobtrusive fitting is very unlikely.

Buy the cables yourself - likes of screwfix do them - with clips, run the cables through from the loft, then call sky (we did this, caused no problems). You need the wall for the dish to be south facing (check out the neighbours), so run the cables round to that area. It's pretty easy to do the installation yourself, but you do need a satellite meter to get the dish pointing in the right direction - if you haven't got one (or access to one), may be best to get sky to put the dish up.
