What do you do if you see a car that looks like it might suit you but the private seller is asking to much? (Eg dealer prices)

I know this is a contentious subject and some forums are unpleasant at times due to people trying to hype up prices but im curious about this and wondered if I would get sensible advice.

If the car was around the corner, it would be no problem to go and have a look and then discuss price. But to travel a long distance to see a car and the owner is under the impression the car he wants to get rid of is worth what a dealer is asking is probably a waste of my time.

My instints are to just ignore the advert and wait until a fairly priced one comes up, but on the other hand im wondering how some are selling and yet others are on the market for such long periods of time. Common sence sugests people are selling for less, are people just using this tactic so they can be seen to drop the price?
 
I would first of all make contact & prove you are a serious buyer .
Car buying/selling is all about supply/demand & negotiation .
You may find the car is actually worth that bit more or that you have a figure you would be happy to leave on the table .
Always worth chasing as you find the one you want when you least expect it

Zenon's are a nice extra but 2 years since last stamped service, mot due soon.
I have managed to talk myself out of pursuing it.

Use the negatives to push your offer forward , 07 42k with decent spec (barring the Flimper :oops: ) at a start of £12k 8)
Get in there at £10500 & sort the service yourself but seller should always cover MOT
The 2 yr since last service wouldn't bother me too much depending on number of miles covered since last one
Bear in mind that unless your budget is infinite there must always be a compromise when buying a used vehicle :thumbsup:
 
Silly prices will usually put off other buyers too, so if you dont ask you dont get.

Make yourself known as a serious buyer and be honest..
 
There are 3 kinds of sellers.

1. Is a reseller (trying to make a profit, starting price high, and will only sell at the "his mind set price" or higher)
2. He is high. He thinks he will sell it for that price.
3. He will drop the price over time when enough people offer him low prices and he realises its been for sale for 5 months.

What YOU can do is call him / mssg him off a second phone / email. offer him a bunch of low prices, then you will have an understanding for how much he will sell it.
If you like the price, you come in with your real name and phone number, and buy the car.
If he is high. well.... he is high.
