Silicon Gel

So having just traded in my S2000 for a Z4MR, I was flicking through the destruction manual, and noticed it said you shouldn't use silcon gel to clean the seals.

On the S2000 forum they rave on about it, and I think it's even mentioned in the manual. Having just recently bought some silicon gel, I was wondering if anyone knew why it's recommended not to use it on the Z4MR, but apparently ok to use on other vehicles?

As far as i know, silicon should always be avoided on seals. It tends to make the seals porous and "hard" (i'm lacking technical vocabulary here...) after some years.

BMW sell a product called "Gummi-Pfege" which is used for rubber care and what they sold me to apply to the seals on my three series.

Description says "Protects and takes care of rubber items. Prevents door weatherstrips from freezing up in winter etc..."

Congratulations on trading the S2000 for it's natural successor :)

I have come from two S2000's to the Z4M R and love it.

I hadn't noticed you shouldn't use silicon gel on the seals !! Not that I was going to but I will bear it in mind should I get tempted when the cold weather starts the roof creaking !

for what seals? like door trim?

The S2000 manual specifies you should use a silicon gel on all seals including door, roof and even boot and bonnet.

I think BMW just says something like do not use on 'any' seals...
