Should the next z4 be the z5?

I don't think so. The Z4 was a new design from the Z3 while the new Z4 will be an improvement to the original Z4 design. Have they changed the 3 series to the 4 series when they went from the E30 to the E36 to the E46 to the E90? That's my $0.02. :)

When BMW named the E85 Z4, they had plans to name all the 2 door models with even numbers. The Z4. The 6 series. The now E92 3 series coupes were going to be named the 4 series as well, but the plans were eventually dropped because of how widely known the "3 series" already was and BMW decided not to tinker with that.
 
According to Kenn Sparks of BMW Manufacturing (Spartanburg Plant) the new Zed will be referred to as Z4 second generation, or something close. It will not change from Z4.
 
So to conclude, GP20 and 20Ducks are both right. The Z4 was named such in anticipation of BMW going to a new naming scheme for their model lines, not because BMW planned to re-name each generation. Going forward, they will stick with Z4. I'm betting they'd love to go back to Z3, but it's too late.

The Z4 was named as such as part of BMW re-aligning their naming convention - it was and is simply an evolution of the Z3. People may not like it, but they are not any different from each other in terms of concept or lineage - the Z4 is simply the later model. Now there is a newer version.

Ah, but you topped it. Hadn't been posted to since October! :poke:

Of course, their realignment scheme for models didn't always go the way it was "leaked". 3 series coupes were to be 2 series, but that didn't happen-would have diluted the 3s.
