Should I first go for a vanos repair?

I've read much on this forum about the problem. I experience engine "hickup" or "jerking" (feels like the engine is gasping for air or fuel between 2,500-3,200rpm). This happens during hard acceleration only. Should I also be looking at other causes than the vanos? My car has 38,000 miles.

i think thats more of a DME reflash...i got mine done under warranty

What's involved? Can anyone other than a dealer tech do this procedure? my car's warranty has expired. :(

Just noticed something odd yesterday. When I switch on the sport mode, it doesn't jerk or hickup during hard acceleration, like it does when it's switched off! This "discovery" seems to confirm that it's not a Vanos seal problem after all. Anybody else experienced this? blacksapphireZ suggested remaping of the control module... :?

Just a thought....

The computer is supposed to "adapt" to your driving style over time. I've noticed with my '03 3.0 that it begins to feel sluggish after a few days of "stop and go" commuter type driving. If using "sport mode" gets rid of the problems, try resetting the "adapted" behaviour.

The process is: Turn the key to the on position (but don't start the car) and wait for 10 seconds, turn the key off and wait for 10 seconds, turn the key back on for 10 seconds, and then start the car.

I could feel the difference right away.

Good luck,
Bill

WOW! did that procedure today and for the first few drives...PERFECT! no more hick-ups or hesitation, the thing just "jumps" ahead with a smooth acceleration. Will drive some more tomorrow and let you know if all is well.
Thanks BillR, great suggestion.

Second day of driving after the reset and the car is running perfect! Acceleration is awesome and linear. I had what seemed to be, all of the symptoms generally associated with the vanos seals problem, but this procedure has proven to be the ticket!!!

I get so much out of this forum and I thank everyone who participates, bringing solutions and opinions that make my time spent here so valuable. Between the teasing and the jokes, some excellent serious stuff is going down here.
