Should I change the water pump?

Hi everyone,

I am planning a trip to Greece this March and I was wondering if I should preventatively change the water pump?
The engine is M54B22 and it has done 91341 miles (147k km). I will also change my DISA since it started to rattle.

Morning

I wouldnt wait to sort the DISA- if that goes its bad news

I'd imagine that the water pump will be original and if you are doing that I would also replace the thermostat and expansion tank at the same time- law of averages will say if you replace one, the other will let go

Think I'd agree with all the above if the parts are originals.
I'd also add, do it as soon as possible, in case it then causes other old parts to fail, so you have time to find and fix them too.
I would look into getting new O-ring seals for the ends of any coolant pipes you're going to be removing. They go flat over time and don't always reseal properly.

Yes, I will also change the DISA.
I saw a lot of discussions already on the forum, but should I put the original one or should I go with repair kit if possible?

Expansion tank was replaced last year after my car started pissing the water while I was drinking coffee
Luckily it cracked on the top so there was enough water left for me to come home.

It seems that I have bought it at the time it needs stuff changed, since all the parts are original and mileage is not too high but not low either.
I have already changed belts, front disks and pads, lower control arms, put new tires on, oil pan gasket, oil filter housing gasket.
To sum up, a lot of things that wear out. Well, for 18 year old car that is nothing honestly.

EDIT: Everything is original.

Logic says that fitting a brand new standard DISA would last you another 50k miles at least.
However, the repair kits are not too expensive (in the UK at least) and the only extra work from doing a straight swap is about 20 minutes to fit the metal parts instead.
So I guess in your case it may come down to availability and price. For me in the UK it's a simple answer, fit the metal kit.

My water pump recently gave up the ghost, at over 123k miles. So you may have more left in it. But you may not... I think you've had a fair run at 90k, I wish I had swapped mine out last year when I did the oil cooler.

Aftermarket DISA vales are only ~£40 if you don't want to repair the original. I got a random one from ebay and seemed identical to the broken one fitted

Well I wouldn't waste money on one identical to a broken one.

Just kidding.

I'll be happy if it lasts another 100k miles ;)

To be fair your car has an N52 engine with the electric water pump that is known to die unexpectedly and cost plenty to replace.

I'm not sure how much of an issue water pumps are on M54 engines, but hopefully someone on here knows!

Taking mine to france. Its going for mot shortly i already have got new expansion tank, water pump, thermostat n cap to be put on at same time better safe than sorry ,the bits are not too pricey

I think that in the end, I will put original DISA, water pump package, new hoses and that's it.
My logic is: I want to keep this car forever and those things will last another 5-10 years without a problem, maybe even more.

Thanks everyone for answers!
